After a great weekend last week, we’re looking for more battling performances and eye-catching rugby results as we move to Round 17 of the Guinness Pro 12.
After Munster suffered a shock at the hands of Scarlets, Leinster moved to the top and join Munster as favourites to lift the Pro 12 trophy, both at betting odds of 2.30. The Ospreys continue to fly the flag for Wales and are at 6.00 while Ulster is still in the hunt at 9.00.
ROUND 17 FRIDAY:
Edinburgh vs Ospreys
Steve Tandy’s Ospreys can move top on Friday night after returning to winning ways last week with a bonus point 26-15 victory over Glasgow. Edinburgh have lost four on the run, but only by a single point last time out to Cardiff in a match they led late on in the game and really should have won. They’ll need to show more resilience to have a prayer against second-placed Ospreys.
Ulster vs Treviso
Ulster are back in contention in fifth place, having grabbed three consecutive league wins to recover from back-to-back Champions Cup defeats. Last week, the Irishmen battled past Zebre and now face the other Italian outfit which is unlikely to add to its two wins so far.
Connacht vs Zebre
Craig Ronaldson scored 17 points in last week’s win over Treviso and will be determined to make his team’s win streak four in Galway to keep their play-off hopes alive. Connacht won 66-21 when they last met Zebre in the Champions Cup in January.
ROUND 17 SATURDAY:
Leinster vs Scarlets
Scarlets did Leinster a real favour by beating Munster last week. They will put up a decent fight against the league leaders when they meet on Saturday, having matched their February record of three league wins in three and moved up to fourth. Jack Conan scored twice for Leinster as they destroyed Dragons last week to go top.
Cardiff Blues vs Munster
Munster had a fine winning run ended by Scarlets at Thomond Park and they will be keen to regain the lead as soon as possible. Only two points separate the top three, but Cardiff’s confidence will be boosted by an 18-17 win over Edinburgh, coming back from 17-6 down with a quarter of the game to play. Munster beware.
Glasgow vs Dragons
The Warriors have suffered three league defeats in February but should have some joy at home against a Dragons team which has been on a dreadful run, albeit with a tough recent sequence against the Irish giants of Munster and Leinster.
Six great games. Enjoy the weekend’s rugby!
