It is guaranteed that there will be a new champion in this year’s US Open.
Naomi Osaka was eliminated in the fourth round while new contenders have emerged as they went to at least the quarterfinals.
It was an abrupt end to the Japanese sensation’s title defence, especially after winning it all last year at the same venue against Serena Williams.
Speaking of Williams, she and Elina Svitolina barged into the Final Four as they both overwhelmed their respective opponents. These two will go up against each other a few days from now which might produce some of the best US Open 2019 highlights.
On the other side of the bracket, Belinda Bencic and Bianca Andreescu are slated to face Donna Vekic and Elise Mertens respectively in the quarterfinals.
Today, SBOBET gives you a rundown on the latest happenings in the US Open women’s division.
Belinda Bencic stuns Naomi Osaka
In what was a grueling, intense affair, Belinda Bencic upended Naomi Osaka anew, 7-5, 6-4 in their matchup. The Swiss native has now beaten Osaka for the third time this year after winning against the Japanese in Indian Wells and in Madrid.
The 13-ranked Bencic got off to a quick start. She went up four points to move up on 3-0 double break, and the match looked to be hers on the taking. However, Osaka didn’t go down without putting up a fight.
Osaka managed to break back for 2-2 by overpowering Bencic in the second set. However, Bencic was simply too good that day as she continued to put on a show striking on the Osaka serve. Osaka’s double fault gave Bencic another break and the latter took the match’s final game with a service hold to love.
The win brought back Bencic to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal since making it to the final eight in the same tournament back on 2014 where she made her debut. On the flip side, Osaka’s loss gives Ashleigh Barty the WTA no. 1 ranking.
Bencic may not the most powerful and fast player out there, but her unprecedented success can be owed to her ability to adapt and read her opponents well.
“I don’t have the biggest power. I don’t have the most winners or most aces. But I think I can really read the opponent’s game well. I definitely try to do that against anyone, not only against her,” said Bencic in the post-match interview.
Elina Svitolina finally breaks through
Elina Svitolina advanced to the US Open semis after defeating Johanna Konta, 6-4, 6-4 in another match that lasted for more than one hour. The Ukrainian player has now won two in a row in Grand Slam quarterfinals after suffering a 0-4 record previously.
Prior to the US Open, Svitolina had been looking for a breakthrough after failing to win titles in the Wimbledon and in the Australian Open this year. But with this win, perhaps this would be the perfect chance for her to go all the way this time around.
Svitolina took an early 3-2 lead but Konta managed to come back, leaving the former very frustrated. From there on, the Ukrainian used her powerful backhand to snatch the momentum back to win the first set.
The second set followed the same pattern with the two of them traded breaks for a 4-3 lead in favor of Svitolina. With the game seemingly out of reach, Konta scored three accurate serves to extend the match. In the end, however, the British standout couldn’t get it going when she had the opportunity.
Konta’s unforced errors were too much for her to handle. All in all, Konta made 35 unforced errors compared to Svitolina’s 13.
The fifth-seeded Svitolina is slated to go up against Serena Williams in the next round – who probably holds the highest US Open 2019 odds of winning this tourney.
Serena Williams makes history anew
The legend of Serena Williams continues to grow as she got her 100th US Open Victory in a win against Wang Qiang. It was also her 13th time to move into the semifinals in the US Open.
The American superstar continues to sustain her fine form after having a great start in the tournament, as she dispatched the 18-seeded Wang in dominating fashion.
From the get-go, Williams took firm control of the match. She hit 25 winners to just ten unforced errors while never having to face a break point. Her strong play prevented Wang to score any winners throughout the game.
Wang Qiang never stood a chance in this game, but give credit to Serena Williams for stepping on the gas pedal all throughout the match. Barring any health issues, Williams is the hot favourite to win over Elina Svitolina in the semis.
