Venus Williams vs Serena Williams (4-6, 4-6)

Serena Williams didn’t only impress online betting with her 23rd Grand Slam title, but she also delighted betting websites with her return to the number one rankings.

Indeed, the younger of the Williams’ sisters proved that she is a different beast among all the players today as she brought live betting to another level with a convincing victory en route to her seventh Australian Open title.

Venus, backed by a supportive crowd in Rod Laver Arena, battled mightily right from the start, forcing Serena to make 13 unforced errors in the opening five games. However, Serena was clearly too strong for the 36-year-old Venus who struggled physically as the game went on.

Although Serena also found herself caught in the tension – smashing a racquet which got her a code violation – she was still able to keep her composure and solidify her return game.

The second set was quite a different story for Venus as she recovered and looked to extend the game, even edging her sister in the game’s longest rally. Nevertheless, Serena created more chances in the match to get the break.

It also didn’t help Venus that she made two critical errors in the decisive moment that finished the match.

With the victory, Serena surpassed Steffi Graf in terms of Open Era major titles. Only Margaret Court, who has 24 titles in the amateur and Open eras, is ahead of the 35-year-old American in the all-time ranks.

To add more to her historic night, Serena also became the first player since Maria Sharapova in 2008 to win the Australian Open without dropping even a single set.

“I really would like to take this moment to congratulate Venus. She’s an amazing person,” Serena said. “There’s no way I would be at 23 without her. There’s no way I’d be at one without her. She’s my inspiration. She’s the only reason I’m standing here today. She’s the only reason the Williams sisters exist. Thank you for inspiring me. Every time you won this week, I felt like I got a win too.”

The victory also allowed Serena to dethrone Angelique Kerber and reclaim her World no. 1 ranking which she lost late last year.

“I’m going on – I’m trying to stay up here as long as possible,” she added. “I missed it last year!”
