Parisians and people from all over the world will be glued to France’s capital from July 26 to August 11 when the best athletes from across the globe compete in the Olympics 2024 Games.

The Olympic Games will be the biggest event the proud country of France has ever organized, as it won’t only host 10,500 of the world’s best athlete’s in the Athlete’s Village, 20,000 accredited journalists, 31,500 volunteers, but also the multitude of supporters who will make the trip to watch and support their nation’s representatives.

Paris will be the centre of the world for 19 days, hosting 329 events in 32 sports and 758 sessions. Crowd favourites like basketball and the world’s most famous sport, football, will all be in the spotlight in Paris, but the 2024 Olympics will also feature four new sporting events: Breaking, Skateboarding, Surfing, and Sport climbing. Adding these disciplines specifically is a bold move in hopes to pique the interest and get the attention of the young people and adults alike. So, it will be wise to get familiar with these disciplines before the Olympic Games commence, and SBOTOP has got you all covered.

Breaking

Breaking is a style of dance which is rooted from the urban streets of New York, specifically the Bronx. Since the 1970’s, Breakdancing has been an integral part of the hip-hop culture, and is still relevant to this day.

This form of artistry is a culmination of toprock, downrock, power moves, and freezes; the four kinds of movements that are the cornerstone of this straining discipline. One must have enough athletic prowess to do head spins, flips, hand stands, and other athletic and acrobatic moves while keeping in tune with the beat.

Breaking athletes and artists are mainly called B-Boys and B-Girls, and the top 16 B-Boys and top 16 B-Girls from across the world will have the opportunity to not just strut their skills, but also bring pride to their nations when they compete in Place de la Concorde on August 9 and 10.

Skateboarding

Considered an extreme sport, skateboarding first appeared back in 1959 in the United States, where skateboards were merely nothing more than roller-skate wheels attached to a boards.

The sport gained rapid popularity and saw game-changing innovations which led to the emergence of different kinds tricks, boards, and competitions. World Cup Skateboarding erected in 1994, where the sport garnered audiences outside of the United States, as competitions in Australia, Brazil, Canada, and some parts of Europe started to pop up.

Skateboarding has been a marquee feature in a handful of global sporting events like the Olympics and the X games and it has become a huge hit especially since its debut during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Japanese skateboarder, Momiji Nishiya became the first ever gold medalist in the women’s street competition. Now, the sport has become one of the most anticipated event in the Olympic Games, luckily Paris houses the Place de la Concorde, a venue that can be boasted as the mecca of urban sports.

The top qualified skateboarders can freely showcase their arsenal of tricks, techniques, and mastery of the sport. Young and adult audiences and admirers will surely flock this event in the Olympic Games, as the top athletes deliver gnarly Olympics 2024 highlights all throughout the competition.

Surfing

A close relative to Skateboarding, Surfing will also be featured in the Paris Olympics, where athletes would perform athletic yet graceful maneuvers on a wave while standing on a board.

Hawaiian athlete and three-time Olympic freestyle champion began his campaign to include surfing in the Olympic programme in 1920, and the beautiful sport finally received its flowers in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where Brazilian Ítalo Ferreira and American Carissa Moore reached the summit and became the first Olympic gold medalists for surfing. Ferreira is set to miss the Paris Games, but Carissa Moore will be able to defend her podium spot and is poised to be the Olympics 2024 odds favourite for Surfing.

This year, 24 qualified surfers will take on the waves of French Polynesia, that’s well known for its crystal clear waters, tranquil tropical lifestyle, and its monster waves.

The sport gained a lot of traction in the Olympic games back in 2020, where more than 35 million fans watched some of the best surfers in the world ride gigantic waves and thread the swells with such grace and technique only the crème de la crème can pull off.

Sport climbing

Sport Climbing is a high-octane, high-intensity sport where athletes would free climb relatively short routes with speed, precision, and strength.

The sport gained light during the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. It wasn’t featured in the marquees and wasn’t publicized that much, but everything changed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Sport Climbing captured the hearts of fans all over the world as gold medalists Alberto Gines Lopez and Janja Garnbret showcased the beauty of the sport and garnered a lot of fans in the process. Now, there are at least 25 million climbers across 150 countries from all parts of the globe.

This sport not only challenges the physical prowess of the athletes but also drains the mental capacity of participants as they traverse through the climb, surgically, mentally mapping out their routes towards the top of the wall in the least time possible.

Paris will hold two events in Sport climbing: Boulder& lead (women’s/men’s) and Speed (women’s/men’s).
