3rd Test: England vs West Indies
The Windies are back and we have a game on! Test Cricket needs the Caribbean party spirit, and after a brilliant match at Headingley, we go to the final game at Lord’s all square.
Against all betting tips and conventional wisdom, the brave young Windies followed up humiliation at Edgbaston with Headingley heroics. The strength of the England team makes Jason Holder’s boys’ achievements all the more impressive. Look at the handicap betting odds for the Lord’s test; 1.20 for an England win, 7.00 for the Windies to stun us again and 5.00 the draw.
In previewing the Second Test, I called on the Windies to remember who they are; and boy did they?! We knew opener Kraigg Brathwaite has talent, and he scored a brilliant 134 in the first innings, followed by another big and crucial knock in the second. But it was Shai Hope who came of age, smashing a century in each innings against a world-class attack of Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad.
When England batted, skipper Holder bowled with accuracy and purpose, setting the standard for the rest of his attack.
In fairness, England didn’t do a whole lot wrong in Leeds, other than drop too many catches. And skipper Joe Root stamped his character on his captaincy, making an attacking declaration which ultimately cost England the game, but made for a brilliant five-day contest. Root has also now scored a fifty in 12 consecutive tests, equalling the record set by the great A B de Villiers.
England will continue to play without fear and expect to win, but now the Windies have rediscovered a little of their own swagger… we could see another great game!
