Australia vs India
There are not many better ways to start the cricketing year than with a one-day international series between these two nations.
SBOBET fans can look forward to a lot over the next week in Melbourne, Adelaide and, firstly, the famous Sydney Cricket Ground.
After a historic victory over Australia in the Boxing Day test en route to a series victory, can India now end their tour on a winning note with victory in the ODI?
It would be quite a statement with the World Cup looming ever closer on the horizon.
Of course, the Aussies need to save their pride after home humiliation and two further test matches against Sri Lanka to come before the month is out.
Talking Points
At whatever level of cricket is between these two nations, they seem to produce big games and attract big crowds.
Whatever happens over the next week, these clashes will undoubtedly feature in the ODI 2019 highlights as the sixth-best team in the ODI world rankings host the team ranked number two.
Fans and pundits alike are widely asking is if this fast bowling attack is the best in the history of Indian cricket.
Certainly, skipper Virat Kohli has changed the culture of Indian cricket with aficionados the world over still marvelling at him becoming the fastest batsman to reach 10,000 one-day international runs – this secured against the West Indies in Visakhapatnam just over two months ago.
He has had a point to prove for the last few months and was proving it with each passing week.
There’s no doubt right now India are enjoying a dominant spell and are prime contenders to win the World Cup, even though much can change before that begins on May 30.
Aside from the quite brilliant Kohli – whose batting average in 2018 in ODIs was more than 100 and included more than 1,200 runs in just 14 innings – they have Rohit Sharma has arrived back in Australia after missing the fourth test due to the birth of his child.
Rohit will look to dominate the largely new Aussie pacers and add to his tally of big scores. He averages above 50 in ODIs in Australia and has scored more than 1100 runs in 27 innings. Then there’s Rohit’s batting partner in Shikhar Dhawan, and all-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to make a comeback to the ODI team after being sidelined due to injury since the Asia Cup.
For Australia, it’s almost as much about who won’t be around than those who will.
To the irritation amongst the former Aussie greats, frontline pacers Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazelwood have all been rested from this ODI series due to recent and future workload.
Coupled with the omission of the likes of Chris Lynn, Travis Head and D’Arcy Short from the one-day squad, it is a move which could backfire on them.
As a result, the hosts have opted for a fresh set of pacers with much expected of Adam Zampa.
Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja are likely to be their openers, and that offers a big opportunity for the former to cement his place in this summer’s World Cup squad.
Shaun Marsh will head the middle-order challenge. And watch out, too, for Nathan Lyon who last year emerged as the third-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket with 49 wickets in 10 games.
Lyon was the chief destructor for the Aussies and also the joint leading wicket-taker in the Test Series against India where he picked up 21 wickets in four games.
There’s so much to watch out for as a crucial cricketing year begins. Enjoy!
History
In their most recent five series ODI clash, India ran out convincing 4-1 winners over the Aussies.
Turn the clock back to ODI series in 2015/16 ‘down under’, and the Aussies were victors by the same scoreline.
It would seem home advantage counts for a lot, given India also prevailed 3-2 as hosts during the 2013/14 series.
Their last ODI meeting came 15 months ago (October 2017) when India won by seven wickets in Nagpur.
Their most recent meeting in the southern hemisphere was in January 2016 when, again, India triumphed – this time by six wickets in Sydney.
By then, however, Australia had cruised into a 4-0 series lead.
