ODI: Ireland vs New Zealand
Ireland welcome New Zealand to The Village for the ODI Tri Series in a game where both teams have a keen eye on the future.
On paper, this should be an easy win for the Black Caps, with betting odds stacked in their favour. But the fourth-ranked ICC team is missing some big names, including Kane Williamson and Trent Boult, away in the Indian Premier League. So sports betting fans could see this as a small chance for an upset.
Ireland are not so much concerned with what the betting tips say will happen, but the Emerald Isle team want to put on a good show in their campaign to secure test status. William Porterfield’s side lost their recent ODI series with England 2-0, but at Lords, there were signs that they are coming of age. Ireland’s first ODI was just 11 years ago, and test status could be secured this year.
Porterfield leads from the front and hit a confident 82 at Lords, and he is backed up by the flamboyant Paul Stirling, who swiped England paceman David Willey’s first three balls for four in an exciting inning. Wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien is a competitive soul and happy to wind up any incoming batter, and with experienced opening bowler Tim Murtagh leading the attack with skill there is much to be encouraged by.
New Zealand will be up for it, with fringe players hoping to take their chance in the absence of the biggest stars. Luke Ronchi is New Zealand’s best ODI keeper but he needs runs. Hamish Bennett is a superb death bowler who can shine while Boult and Tim Southee make their way back from India.
Ireland should give the Black Cap hopefuls a stern test and raise their own status in the game at the same time.
