2nd Test: Australia vs England
After watching their team take a ten-wicket drubbing at the Gabba, the Barmy Army of England cricket fans heads to Adelaide in hope of a fight back.
The Aussies are favourites at 1.60 to win the Second Test, with England’s betting odds at 3.50 and the draw 5.50. For those of us who apply more caution to our handicap betting, you can get 3.12 on England to square the series, Draw no Bet.
There is plenty of hope for the Three Lions and their passionate fans as defeat in the first test is just that, one out of five. The Aussies haven’t lost a test at the Gabba since 1988, which is why they start there, all with favourable conditions to give them an early edge. And they took full advantage of them last week, lead by the pace threat of Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc and the batting excellence of captain Steve Smith, who scored a vital first innings unbeaten century when his team was on the rack.
There’s plenty of fight in this England bunch, which was on top at the Gabba midway through the third day. Skipper Joe Root scored a battling fifty, and Stuart Broad bowled with menace, collecting three first innings wickets. The management should be happy to hear wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow will not face disciplinary action over his head butt with Aussie opener Cameron Bancroft.
Smith’s team will be watching Ben Stokes’ arrival in New Zealand with interest, if not concern. The world class all-rounder’s immediate future is still to be decided by the police after a late night incident in Bristol but if he is cleared to play some part in the Ashes, that will give the Aussies a shiver.
In the meantime, Root’s team needs to stay in the series.
