Brazil vs Uruguay
The South American qualifiers took a twist last week and the next round of matches could throw up some more big results, with World Cup 2026: Brazil vs Uruguay the eye-catching clash of Round 12.
Brazil drew 1-1 away to Venezuela last time out while Uruguay beat Colombia 3-2 at home. Runaway leaders Argentina went to Paraguay and they fell to a surprise loss which makes the race to win the CONMEBOL qualifiers, always a prestigious claim, that bit more exciting, and both Uruguay and Brazil, currently second and fourth, can still take that prize.
They are both in great shape to qualify for the World Cup finals in America and Brazil are backed to leapfrog La Celeste on Tuesday, with the SBOTOP Brazil vs Uruguay betting odds predicting a comfortable home win for Junior’s men, but Uruguay boss Marcelo Bielsa always has a few tricks up his sleeve.
Talking Points
Raphinha rises for Brazil
The Selecao made a poor start to their 2026 World Cup campaign but they have started to click over the past month with an away win over Chile away and a 4-0 drubbing of Peru at home. Junior has a spectacular array of attacking talent at his disposal, with the Real Madrid pair of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo and Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli all able to tear open a defence. But it is the form of wide man Raphinha, for both club and country, which is pleasing his coaches in Barcelona and Brazil.
The 27-year-old is top scoring for the Selecao with four goals in the qualifiers and he was on target last week to earn Brazil a point. His 43rd minute free kick was superbly executed, flying in off the post, but a second half leveller from substitute Telasco Segovia denied Junior’s side all three points.
It wasn’t such a good night for Vinicius who hit the post with an early effort and he also missed a chance to win the game from the penalty spot. In a bad-tempered finale Venezuela went down to ten men as Alexander Gonzalez was sent off for hitting both Martinelli and Vinicius.
Uruguay find their shooting boots
After an impressive start to their campaign La Celeste hit the skids, particularly in front of goal as they picked up three 0-0 draws and a 1-0 defeat over four games.
Colombia at home was always going to be a special clash for Uruguay and so it turned out to be as the goals came flooding back; and La Celeste came out on the right side of a five-goal thriller as Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte scored a dramatic winner, 11 minutes into injury time. It was the 23-year-olds’ first goal for his country, and it was a big one as Uruguay climbed up to within three points of leaders Argentina.
Colombia went ahead thanks to a brilliant free kick from Juan Quintero but Uruguay hit a quick-fire double just after the break. First Colombian centre back Davinson Sanchez put through his own net and then Rodrigo Aguirre made it 2-1 to La Celeste. Six minutes into stoppage time Andres Gomez thought he’d earned a point for Colombia but Ugarte popped up, five minutes later to grab all three points, and Uruguay leap-frogged their visitors into second place.
Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is top scoring with five goals, but he has hit a dry run and will be desperate to get on the score sheet against the Selecao, while Real Madrid star Federico Valverde will be relishing the chance to take on his club mates in this battle of the South American titans.
History
These are two great nations with big histories; but the Selecao have been the top dogs in recent times and are ahead in the Brazil vs Uruguay results by ten wins to three while there have been three draws. But Uruguay have come out on top in the last two meetings, a 4-2 penalty shootout win in the Copa America in July and, in 2023, a 2-0 victory at the start of the World Cup qualifiers.
Uruguay have been frustrated with four draws in the last six games, one win and one loss, while Brazil have won three, drawn one and lost two.
Betting Tip
Brazil are hot favourites, at odds of 1.52, to win this clash with Colombia at 4.93 and the draw is priced at 3.40. The Selecao will be keen to get back to winning ways but they meet a side which has found its mojo again, and I’m looking forward to a superb ding-dong battle…with plenty of goals.
