World Cup 2022: Ukraine Eager to Prove That They Belong With the Big Boys

Ukraine vs France

Ukraine and France were left disappointed in their first game back here at the international break. And as they meet once more in the World Cup 2022 qualifiers, both are going to fight for a victory this weekend.

These two nations are in Group D and they hold the top spots at the table as France have eight points while Ukraine have four. Finland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kazakhstan round out the group with two points apiece.

It’s still too early to say on who’ll move on to the next round given that there are a few more group stage matches left, but the SBOTOP betting odds favour Les Bleus to come out on top.

That leaves a challenge for Ukraine to seal their own berth and facing France should give them an idea on how far they’ve come especially in these past few years.

Back then, it would be understandable to think that the Frenchmen will blow the Ukranians away. However, it won’t be the case this time around as they are ready to turn heads once more.

Talking Points

Roman Yaremchuk is the alpha dog for Ukraine

Ukraine’s hitmen must be on their shooting boots when they host France and they have the pieces that can get the job done.

Their main threat out front is going to be Roman Yaremchuk, who is one of the underrated strikers in Europe. The Benfica man is in strong form since he has scored two goals in their last two qualifying matches.

His goal against Kazakhstan yesterday made it to the World Cup 2022 highlights reel and many consider it as one of the top goals of the qualifiers.

When Yaremchuk caught the ball on his chest from 30 yards in the 2nd minute, he then unleashed a dipping volley that found the back of the net to give his team the lead.

They were poised to win the said fixture but Ruslan Valiullin bailed the Kazakhs with his brace. If it weren’t for Danylo Sikan’s goal in added time, Ukraine wouldn’t even have a single point.

Ukraine cannot solely depend on Roman Yaremchuk versus France and they’ll need more from the likes of Andriy Yarmolenko, Oleksandr Zinchecnko, and Ruslan Malinovskiy.

France keen on bouncing back

France aren’t exactly at their best form here in the World Cup 2022 qualifiers despite being dubbed as the favourites in Group D.

Nine weeks after their shocking loss to Switzerland in the Final 16 of Euro 2020, Les Bleus were held to a draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina as they got off to a slow start.

Edin Dzeko put his team up by one goal when he slid the ball past Presnel Kimpembe on the 36th minute, but his goal was quickly cancelled out three minutes later.

Antoine Griezmann hopes to help France seal a win over Ukraine in World Cup 2022 qualifying game
France star Antoine Griezmann celebrates after scoring during World Cup 2022 qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina

Antoine Griezmann, who is set to return to Atletico Madrid, attempted a header after a Kylian Mbappe corner and the ball was deflected off of Dennis Hadzikadunic’s thigh and went into the net.

Les Bleus held on despite being reduced to 10 men after Jules Kounde was sent off because of a brutal challenge on Sead Kolasinac five minutes into the second half. But overall, Didier Deschamps knows that his men are way better than this.

History

In their previous 11 international meetings, Les Bleus hold the major edge with six wins while the Ukranians have won only once along with four draws.

During their most recent face off last March, Ukraine caught everyone by surprise when they held France to a 1-1 draw over at Stade de France.

Antoine Griezmann put Les Bleus on top with his beautiful curling effort in the 19th minute, but Ukraine replied near the hour mark as Serhiy Sydorchuk scored when the ball was deflected off of Presnel Kimpembe.

Betting Tip

??
Ukraine vs France France Asian Handicap -1.00 @ 2.07
September 5, 02:45 (GMT+8)

This game is France’s to lose since they are the favoured side in the World Cup 2022 odds.

Les Bleus are installed at 1.54 to win, while Ukraine are the underdogs at 5.00 and a draw is priced at 3.65 in the 1X2 market.

France may have hit a rough patch last Wednesday but we expect them to up the ante come this Saturday. They are a formidable group and they’re one of the favourites to win the upcoming World Cup even before the tournament officially starts in 2022.

We do expect Ukraine to put up a valiant stand against their visitors, but it’ll be too much of an ask for them to come out with another positive result versus a relentless France team.
