Brazil vs Peru
Days after the controversial suspension of their tiff against Argentina, Brazil will return to action in the midweek when they’ll host Peru here in the World Cup 2022 qualifiers.
Despite having not played a full match last weekend, Brazil still lead the pack in the CONMEBOL standings with 21 points and we expect them to come out energetic since they’ve had few more days of rest.
Meanwhile, Peru are six notches below their hosts with only eight points and their chances of making it into the top spots are slim. Ricardo Gareca’s men are indeed facing an uphill climb here against the South American juggernauts.
Los Incas are coming off of a hard-earned victory in the last time out and they will want a similar result from this upcoming fixture, but it might be too much of an ask given their underdog status versus the Samba Boys.
Time is running out for Peru to keep their World Cup qualifying hopes alive so they must bring their A-game and more at the Arena Pernambuco this Thursday.

Talking Points
Brazil look to brush aside previous drama
The Samba Boys are intent on keeping their undefeated streak alive after making headlines last Sunday for the wrong reasons.
Brazil were tipped to square off versus Argentina in what was a highly-anticipated Copa America Finals rematch, but the game has been cancelled just after kick-off.
Brazilian health officials called for the suspension of the game, claiming that several Argentine players broke COVID-19 protocols.
Although the players were not named, England is part of Brazil’s red list and La Albiceleste have four players who are part of the Premier League.
This incident made rounds in social media and in the World Cup 2022 news which drew reactions from fans, and Tite’s men will look to put that controversy behind them with another win here.
Tite has a long list of absentees in the qualifiers but they boast impressive squad depth.
Neymar remains their main protagonist up front and he’ll be joined by Gabriel Barbosa and Lucas Paqueta. Casemiro, Bruno Guimaraes, and Everton Ribeiro will hold down the midfield and their backline is covered by the quartet of Marquinhos, Eder Militao, Alex Sandro, and Danilo.
Peru are backed against the wall
Los Incas have built some momentum after finishing fourth in the 2021 Copa America and they hope to carry that with them against the Samba Boys this Thursday.
Peru almost won against Uruguay when Renato Tapia put them ahead, but Giorgian de Arrascaeta rescued the visitors with his timely equaliser. Nonetheless, Ricardo Gareca was pleased to earn a point from that contest considering their slow start to their qualifying campaign in 2020.
Against Venezuela last weekend, Peru came away winners when Christian Cueva scored the only goal of the game and it helped as well when their opponents were reduced to 10 men.
Ricardo Gareca’s side has shown major progress against Brazil this summer. After losing 4-0 in the Copa America opener against the Samba Boys, Los Incas bounced back by making it to as far as the semi-finals.
Hopefully for them, however, their improvement will culminate into a victory since they are desperate for more points to enter into the top four.
History
In the 50 international matches played between the two teams, Brazil have won 36 times while Peru have only tallied nine victories along with five draws.
Their most recent meeting took place in the semi-finals of the Copa America where Brazil came away with a 1-0 win as Lucas Paqueta emerged as their hero when he scored the lone goal during the 35th minute.
Ricardo Gareca’s men tried to spark a late rally when they were facing the deficit. But in the end, they were left ruing their missed chances.

September 10, 08:30 (GMT+8) |
It’s not surprising to know that the Samba Boys are installed as the favourites to win in this upcoming match, as per the World Cup 2022 odds.
Brazil are pegged to win at 1.31, while Peru are priced much lower at 9.75 and chances for a draw are at 4.70 in the 1×2 market.
Even with the loss of several key players due to the strict interzonal COVID-19 restrictions, Tite still has a lot of talent and quality at his disposal.
Peru can certainly make it difficult for the hosts similar to what happened in their Copa America semi-finals clash last July, but all signs point to another three points for Brazil this midweek.
