These Stars Will Stay in Serie A For Now

Besides bringing in new players to strengthen your team, sometimes keeping the ones who are already there is more than enough to go about with your transfer business, especially before the start of the new season.

Because Serie A teams are not as financially flexible compared to their counterparts in the Premier League and even La Liga, most of their moves this summer transfer window so far have been about handing out extensions to their key players.

Inter Milan, Juventus, and Atalanta are some of the teams that did this, bolstering the Serie A 2024 odds in the Scudetto race for 2024-25.

So, who are these players that they re-signed? Continue reading below, as SBOTOP lists them one by one.

Lautaro Martinez and Nicolo Barella, Inter Milan

After months of negotiations, Inter Milan have locked down three important squad members to new extensions, as Lautaro Martinez, Nicolo Barella, and head coach Simone Inzaghi will remain in San Siro.

Inzaghi was given another year to oversee his project, while Martinez and Barella will continue with the squad until 2029.

All three of them were important to their Serie A championship run last season. Lautaro Martinez had 26 goals and three assists, while Nicolo Barella recorded two goals and four assists.

Keeping Martinez in particular was the team’s utmost priority because he is their team captain and arguably their best player.

The Nerazzurri are fancying their chances to repeat because they plan to run it back next season.

Besides keeping the same core, Inter Milan reinforced their depth with the new arrivals of Mehdi Taremi, Josep Martinez, Issiaka Kamate, and Piotr Zielinski. They also triggered their buy options on Marko Arnautovic, Carlos Augusto, and Davide Frattesi.

However, it seems that Inter Milan are far from done this summer, as they’re keeping an eye on Atletico Madrid’s Mario Hermoso and Barcelona’s Vitor Roque.

On the other hand, highly-rated wing-back Denzel Dumfries has been linked with a move out of the club, as several Premier League clubs are interested, including Manchester United.

Stefan de Vrij is also getting suitors this summer since he still has one year left on his current Inter Milan contract.

Fabio Miretti and Andrea Cambiaso, Juventus

Juventus’ youth revolution is now underway with Thiago Motta, as youngsters Fabio Miretti and Andrea Cambiaso have penned new deals with the Old Lady. Miretti will remain a Bianconeri until 2028, while Cambiaso’s extension is up until 2029.

Under Max Allegri, Miretti and Cambiaso were rotation players in midfield since they still had Adrien Rabiot, Weston McKennie, and Samuel Iling-Junior.

But with Rabiot and Iling-Junior leaving and McKennie linked to a possible move away from the club, this means that head coach Thiago Motta will likely have bigger roles in store for Miretti and Cambiaso.

Other than re-signing Miretti and Cambiaso, Juventus managed to bring in Juan Cabal, Khephren Thuram, Michele Di Gregorio, and Douglas Luiz as their newest reinforcements. The Bianconeri are also interested in Teun Koopmeiners, as per the Serie A 2024 updates.

The addition of Douglas Luiz, in particular, should give Thiago Motta something to work with since he has been one of the most underrated midfielders in the Premier League in the last two seasons, recording the most chances (98), chances from set pieces (42), tackles (130), and interceptions (63) in that span.

Khephren Thuram and Juan Cabal are considered projects, while Di Gregorio might take over the first-choice goalkeeper spot, with Wojciech Szczesny on the chopping block.

Charles De Ketelaere, Atalanta

After showing out this past season, Atalanta decided to trigger their €22 million buy clause on Charles De Ketelaere to fully pry him away from AC Milan.

The 23-year-old Belgian international had a breakthrough campaign with La Dea, scoring 12 goals and 10 assists in all competitions, so this feels like a bargain for Atalanta.

Keeping Charles De Ketelaere helps Atalanta’s depth because they will be playing European football again next season. The former AC Milan man has shown the capability to play well as a starter or off the bench.

Other than extending De Ketelaere, Atalanta also bought Ben Godfrey and Ibrahim Sulemana and loaned Nicolo Zaniolo from Galatasaray this offseason.

And some of their notable sells and releases are Alexey Miranchuk, Duvan Zapata, Jose Luis Palomino, Caleb Okoli, and Nicolo Cambiaghi, which should free up money for them to make new moves in the future. Atalanta are coming off a successful 2023-24 campaign, as they won their first-ever Europa League title. This was their first notable trophy since winning the 1962-63 Coppa Italia.
