Serie A: Super Scott Keeps Napoli in the Hunt

A brilliant brace from Scott McTominay earned Napoli a 2-2 draw away to Inter Milan to keep the race for the 2026 Scudetto on the boil. The action packed stalemate left Napoli in third place, four points behind the Nerazzurri, ahead of Roma on goal difference and a point behind AC Milan.

Inter Milan versus Napoli was the Serie A clash of the weekend and, on Sunday night, it certainly delivered as both teams went in search of an invaluable victory. The in-form Marcus Thuram was the provider for Federico Dimarco’s early opener as Inter drew first blood but then, on 26 minutes Eljif Elmas crossed and McTominay made no mistake from close range to level the scores. In a frantic second half Napoli’s Rasmus Hojlund hit the upright and then Alessandro Bastoni hit the post from distance for Inter.

When Amir Rrahmani tripped Henrikh Mkhitaryan, VAR awarded the spot kick and Hakan Calhanoglu made no mistake from 12 yards. But it was McTominay who popped up again on 81 minutes converting a pass from Noa Lang to grab a crucial point for the reigning champions and peg the current leaders back.

AC Milan missed the chance to pile the pressure on Inter when they were held to a 1-1 draw away to struggling Fiorentina. But it could have been so much worse for Milan as the Viola entered the 90th minute a goal to the good, but a Christopher Nkunku strike denied the hosts a third win of the campaign and left them stranded down in 18th place.

When Fiorentina headed home midway through the second half it was no more than Paulo Vanoli’s men deserved, but when Nkunku lashed home the leveller they had to settle for a point. Fiorentina seem to have turned a corner, with only one defeat in five league outings, and they could easily have won the game in injury time, but Marco Brescianini’s close range effort crashed off the bar before Milan keeper Mike Maignan made a brave stop to deny Moise Kean.

Fiorentina moved to within two points of safety but the SBOTOP Serie A 2026 betting odds say this was not a great weekend for Milan, who were below par after a dominant first half.

Giallorossi stick at it to beat Sassuolo

Matias Soule scored on the 79th minute of AS Roma's 2-0 Serie A win against Sassuolo
AS Roma’s Matias Soule in action against Sassuolo

Gian Piero Gasperini’s move from Bergamo to Rome in the summer took a fair share of the Serie A 2026 news headlines and the Giallorossi made a fast start to the campaign while Atalanta floundered. Well, in recent weeks Gasperini’s new side have faltered a little, winning two and losing two of the last four, while Atalanta have picked up the pace to join the fringe of the race for European places. Roma’s clash with Sassuolo on Saturday gave them a chance to get back on track; and so they did, beating Sassuolo 2-0 and, in doing so, moving up to third place in the race for the Scudetto. With 60 per cent possession and 26 shots to five, six to three on target, Roma were totally dominant but they had to be patient against a stubborn Sassuolo defence, breaking the deadlock on 76 minutes. Manu Kone was the man on the spot to head home a delightful chip from Matias Soule, and just three minutes later Soule got the second, guiding the ball home from a clever back-heel courtesy of Stephan El Sharaawy.

Roma were rampant in the closing minutes and Mario Hermoso and Kone had both chances to add to the score but 2-0 was enough to take Gasperini’s side back into the Champions League places, while Sassuolo’s second defeat in four days left the visitors in 11th place.

Meanwhile Atalanta beat Torino 2-0 to move up to seventh.

And La Dea were sandwiched between Como and Bologna who started the weekend in sixth and eighth place and stayed put on Saturday after playing out a 1-1 draw, though Lazio moved up to eighth on Sunday, dropping Bologna a spot, thanks to an edgy 1-0 win away to Hellas Verona.

Bologna are without a win in six, but they must have thought they were over the line until a 94th minute moment of quality from Martin Baturina lifted the roof off the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium. Rossoblu striker Nicolo Cambiaghi had a match to remember after he put Bologna ahead, beating one defender before sliding the ball home just after the break for his first goal since October. But on the hour the 25 year old took an early bath after he caught Como defender Ignace van der Brempt with a trailing elbow. VAR prompted the ref to give Cambiaghi a red card which seemed harsh, as the Como man had clearly barged into him.

And the visitors’ sense of injustice was complete when Baturina picked up the ball deep into stoppage time, jinked past two defenders and curled a beauty into the top corner. It was a blow for Bologna, but at least they had ended Como’s three match winning run.
