Serie A: Lazio Must Fend Off Torino’s Challenge to Stay Ahead

Lazio vs Torino

The Serie A title race is not the only one heating up. The other teams below the Top 3 of Inter Milan, Napoli, and Atalanta are battling for the remaining European football berths. Lazio are among them, and they’re holding on for dear life.

Marco Baroni’s side is sixth in the Italian top-flight table with 51 points – good for a Europa Conference League spot. However, they cannot afford to be complacent since AS Roma (49 points), Fiorentina (48 points), and AC Milan (47 points) are lurking behind. Lazio did not win their last two league games, including a humiliating 5-0 loss at the hands of Bologna.

On the other hand, Torino are on their way up. Paolo Vanoli’s men are undefeated in their last four matches, including a 1-0 win over Empoli before the international break. As a result, the Granata are 11th in the standings with 38 points.

Talking Points

Lazio have a Castellanos problem

Lazio needed the international break to digest their horrific loss against Bologna in their most recent outing. The Biancocelesti’s form has declined recently, as even their 3-2 aggregate win over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League Round of 16 was far from convincing.

Many point to Taty Castellanos’ absence as the reason for their slump, and it’s not hard to blame them. The Argentine centre-forward has been in and out of the lineup due to a calf injury. Castellanos is Lazio’s leading scorer with nine league goals and three assists and is doubtful to return against Torino.

Marco Baroni has tried going with Loum Tchaouna as Castellanos’ replacement in the starting XI, but the 21-year-old is still raw and hasn’t found the back of the net in the league. Against Torino, don’t be surprised if Boulaye Dia or Tijjani Noslin will take the No. 9 spot, with Mattia Zaccagni, Matias Vecino, and Gustav Isaksen playing auxiliary attacking roles.

In other team news, Lazio will miss one of their key defenders, as Patric is out for the rest of the 2024-25 campaign due to an ankle injury that needs surgery.

Vanoli finds the right mix for Torino

Torino have only tasted one loss since the New Year because they’ve been more clinical in the final third, notching 15 league goals in 11 games. Paolo Vanoli has found the right combination in the final third, going for the attacking trio of Che Adams, Nikola Vlasic, and Eljif Elmas.

Adams is enjoying his first full season with Il Granata, recording eight league goals and three assists. Vlasic is behind Adams with four league goals and three assists, and Elmas already has three league goals since joining the squad before the start of February via loan from RB Leipzig.

Elmas’ rise has relegated Duvan Zapata and Antonio Sanabria to the bench. Meanwhile, Valentino Lazaro (six assists) and Cesare Casadei have also played more in recent weeks.

Sitting in 11th place is a sweet spot for Torino because they’re not involved in the relegation scrap. However, Il Granata are unlikely to launch a serious challenge for European places either.

History

Lazio and Torino have already squared off earlier this season. The Biancocelesti survived a five-goal thriller against Il Granata last September at Stadio Olimpico. Matteo Guendouzi, Boulaye Dia, and Tijjani Noslin scored for Lazio, and Che Adams and Saul Coco scored for Torino. Paolo Vanoli’s men didn’t have enough time to complete their comeback.

Lazio are on a three-game winning streak against Torino after failing to win their five previous Serie A encounters (D4, L1). Marco Baroni’s side could beat Torino four straight times for the first time in the Italian top-flight this Monday. The Biancocelesti have lost only two of their 20 Serie A home games against Torino in the three-point era (W8, D10).

Betting Tip

The Serie A 2025 odds back the hosts to take the three points. Lazio are 1.78 favourites to win at home, whereas Torino are 4.18 underdogs, and a draw is at 3.34 in the 1X2 market.

However, their contrasting recent forms beg to differ, so choosing the winner of this contest could be a tough call. Instead, we will go for Total Goal 2-3 at 1.97 as our recommended bet since both teams can put up new Serie A 2025 highlights this Monday. SBOTOP bettors can also go for Under 2.75 at 1.63 and Under 2.50 at 1.82 as alternatives. Moreover, a Correct Score of 3-2 in favour of the Biancocelesti – the result of the reverse fixture – can give you a massive 32.00 payout.
