Serie A: Latest Turin Derby Offers a Platform for the Unheralded to Prove Their Worth

Juventus vs Torino

One of the most historic rivalries in Serie A is about to take place again this weekend as Juventus host Torino at the Allianz Stadium for the 250th edition of the Derby della Mole.

Juventus are currently fourth in the Italian top-flight table. At 14 points, they are in a three-way tie with third-seeded Napoli and fifth-seeded Fiorentina, so getting another win here would break the deadlock in their favour.

Max Allegri’s side is fresh from another goalless draw against Atalanta last time out, which was the same exact scoreline in their previous friendly meeting in August.

Meanwhile, Torino are in 10th place with nine points and are on a four-way tie with Frosinone, Sassuolo, and Monza. Ivan Juric’s men dropped points in their last two league games, so they’re hoping to get back into the win column.

Talking Points

Juventus’ defence getting it done

Max Allegri’s pragmatic approach has been criticised by pundits and even Juventus fans, but you can’t deny the positive run of Serie A 2023 results he’s had so far this year.

Under his tutelage, the Old Lady has kept seven clean sheets in their last 12 league matches dating back to last season. Since Allegri returned to Turin in 2021, the club has recorded 37 clean sheets, which is equaled only by defending Scudetto champions Napoli.

Despite losing franchise cornerstones Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini in the past transfer windows, defence remains the calling card for Juventus, with the likes of Gleison Bremer, Danilo, Daniele Rugani, and Federico Gatti stepping up.

Wojciech Szczesny will play a vital role in Juventus’ Serie A match against Torino

Meanwhile, Wojciech Szczesny is still one of the most underrated goalkeepers in the world today. If it weren’t for his late heroics against Atalanta last weekend, when he made an amazing fingertip save to parry Luis Muriel’s free-kick, Juventus would’ve been in a worse position right now.

With Dusan Vlahovic and Federico Chiesa nursing injuries, Arek Milik, Moise Kean, and Timothy Weah are viable candidates to start up front. However, in the end, they will look to win this game via their defence and midfield.

Torino’s forwards have something to prove

Torino’s Duvan Zapata and Nemanja Radonjic enter the 2023-24 campaign with a chip on their shoulders. Both of them have already scored this season, combining for four goals thus far.

Zapata, who was a key player for Atalanta in the past few seasons, got to Torino because he was loaned out by La Dea after a poor 2022-23 campaign. The Colombian striker was deemed a surplus because Atalanta already have the likes of Charles De Ketelaere, Gianluca Scamacca, and Ademola Lookman up front.

Radonjic, meanwhile, has finally found a permanent home in Torino after being loaned out by Marseille in the past three seasons.

Zapata in particular has been a thorn on Juventus’ side, as he has notched six Serie A goals against them in the past, with both of the most recent two coming at the Allianz Stadium. With Antonio Sanabria out of form, he and Radonjic will lead the line for Il Toro.

History

The recent Derby della Mole head-to-heads have been particularly lopsided in favour of the Bianconeri. Across all competitions, Juventus are undefeated in their last 18 Turin derbies (W14, D4) since Max Allegri’s return to the club.

And in Serie A, it’s even more one-sided, as Juventus lost only one of their last 34 games against Torino, with the sole defeat being a 2-1 result in April 2015 (W25, D8).

Juventus also happens to be the team against which Torino have lost more games (76) and conceded more goals (243) in their Serie A history.

The last derby won by Torino at Juventus’ home in Serie A was back in April 1995 (2-1). Since then, the Bianconeri have had 12 wins and five draws in 17 games against Il Toro.

As noted earlier, this is going to be the 250th meeting between these two Turin-based clubs. In the 249 matches prior, Juventus have recorded 110 wins, while Torino have won 73 times along with 66 draws.

Betting Tip

The SBOTOP Serie A 2023 odds have the hosts as the favourites to win on Saturday. Juventus are priced at 1.91, while a Torino victory is at 3.85 odds and a draw is installed at 3.15 in the 1X2 market.

We anticipate another low-scoring derby (which Juventus thrive on) since that has been the trend in their recent encounters, so you may think about going for either Under 2.00 at 2.17 or Total Goals 0-1 at 2.56 as your alternatives for our recommended bet above.
