Serie A: Home is Where the Heart is For Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku

countdown banner

After enduring tumultuous campaigns in the Premier League, Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku are going back to Italy for the 2022-23 season.

It is here in Serie A where both were at their finest, as Romelu Lukaku was the central figure for Inter Milan’s Scudetto win in 2021 while Paul Pogba won four consecutive Scudettos for Juventus since his first arrival in 2012.

Both have something to prove as they’ll move back to their respective homes, which should bring excitement to their fans since they’ll look to make new memories together.

Elsewhere, Napoli’s Serie A 2022 odds for the title next season are in jeopardy since they haven’t reinforced their squad so far this transfer window and they might lose a couple more key players.

Continue to read on below as we round up the latest Serie A 2022 updates.

Deja vu for Paul Pogba and Juventus

Paul Pogba will join Juventus for the second time in a decade, making him the Bianconeri’s first official signing this summer.

Six years ago, the Frenchman left Turin for Manchester United for a then-world record fee of £93.2-M, but his second spell with the Red Devils was quite underwhelming considering his first few seasons with them.

Immediately upon his arrival in 2016, Pogba added quality to United’s midfield and he helped them win the Carabao Cup and the UEFA Europa League in his debut season. The Europa League triumph under Jose Mourinho was the Red Devils’ last trophy and they’ve yet to win silverware ever since.

But since then, Pogba has had a falling out with Mourinho and injuries have ruined his form over these last few years. And what made his struggles at the club more infuriating for United fans was that it was the opposite when he played for Les Bleus, playing a vital role in their World Cup triumph in 2018.

Manchester United decided earlier this month that they will no longer give the midfielder an extension, meaning that they’ll lose him again on a free.

In the aftermath of his departure, Pogba’s “Pogmentary” revealed his scathing comments about his time with the Red Devils which didn’t go down well with the supporters.

In the said documentary, Pogba lamented that United’s offer of £300,000-a-week was “nothing”, which is absurd since it’s an exorbitant amount in itself.

Safe to say that his relationship with United fans is now at a point of no return.

Inter Milan have a striker surplus with Romelu Lukaku’s arrival

Here at SBOTOP, we’ve kept tabs on Romelu Lukaku’s push for a San Siro return and now it’s confirmed as Chelsea and Inter Milan have agreed to a loan deal worth €8-M.

It has only been one season since the Belgian striker rejoined the Blues, but he didn’t have a great campaign in London with 15 goals and two assists in 44 matches across all competitions.

In stark contrast, Lukaku had 64 goals and 16 assists in 95 appearances during his time with Inter Milan.

After losing out to city rivals AC Milan in the Serie A title race last season, Inter Milan are hopeful that Lukaku’s return would push them back to the top since he was so good in a Nerazzurri shirt.

Prior to Lukaku’s confirmation, Inter Milan were looking at Paulo Dybala, who left Juventus this summer on a free.

As of the moment, the Nerazzurri are loaded up front with Romelu Lukaku, Joaquin Correa, Lautaro Martinez, Edin Dzeko, and Alexis Sanchez, leaving no room for a potential Dybala arrival.

More players leaving Napoli?

Kalidou Koulibaly’s current contract with the club is running out at the end of next season and he’s being courted by several teams in Europe – namely Chelsea, Juventus, and Barcelona.

Chelsea are a little light at centre-half following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen so getting the Napoli captain would be ideal for them, and the same can be said for Barcelona and Juventus.

Despite speculation about his future, Koulibaly loves playing for Napoli and he believes that they can still vie for silverware next season even if there’ll be “a few changes” in the horizon.

Another Napoli player hot in the transfer rumours is Fabian Ruiz, who is linked with Arsenal and Newcastle since his current contract is also expiring at the end of next summer. Napoli have reportedly lowered the asking price for the attacking midfielder at €30-M.

Napoli have already lost Lorenzo Insigne to Toronto FC so they must make certain additions this summer if they plan on staying competitive ahead of next term.
