Serie A: Former Champions Clash in Turin

countdown banner

Juventus vs Inter Milan

Two former Serie A champions are slated to go head-to-head as Inter Milan visit Juventus in Turin on Sunday night.

Juventus and Inter Milan were on top of the league before in 2020 and 2021. But right now, AC Milan are the reigning titlists and both of them are lagging behind in the Italian top-flight table.

Inter Milan are at sixth with 24 points, while Juventus are at eighth with 22. Despite their lacklustre starts, there’s still time for them to catch up since they’ve improved their form given their recent stretch of good Serie A 2022 results.

Both clubs are on a winning streak with Inter Milan at four and Juventus at three, so something has to give when these rivals meet once again.

Talking Points

Juventus need some of their reinforcements back

Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic is set to be fit in the upcoming Serie A match against Inter Milan
Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic celebrates scoring their first goal in Champions League against Benfica

Max Allegri is hoping that Gleison Bremer, Dusan Vlahovic, and Angel Di Maria are all 100-per cent fit come Sunday to ease the burden of their busy medical staff since they’re already dealing with injuries to Paul Pogba, Weston McKennie, Leandro Paredes, among others.

Vlahovic – the team’s top scorer with seven goals plus two assists – was absent in their 2-1 loss to PSG on Thursday which essentially sealed their relegation to the Europa League. On the other hand, Bremer and Di Maria have been sidelined these past few weeks.

Meanwhile, Federico Chiesa made his long-awaited return as he was a second-half sub against the Parisiens. It was great to see him back on the pitch for the first time in 10 months.

The 25-year-old winger suffered a torn ACL in a victory over AS Roma back in January. He was forced to watch Italy miss out on the Qatar World Cup and Juventus’ horrible start to the 2022-23 campaign.

Juventus are counting on Chiesa to improve their overall attack, although they’ll have to bring him into the mix gradually due to rust.

Recent league wins over Torino, Empoli, and Lecce aren’t something to write home much about given their lofty standards. However, it’s considered a step in the right direction, especially for the beleaguered Allegri.

Inter Milan can cope without Romelu Lukaku this time

Romelu Lukaku is sidelined once again as he suffered another injury setback during their 4-0 Champions League group stage victory over Viktoria Plzen last Thursday.

The 29-year-old was on the pitch for 22 minutes, but was forced to stop after he re-aggravated his hamstring injury, and he hasn’t played since.

But unlike before, Inter Milan are much better equipped to carry on without the Belgian since their other attackers are banging in form.

Strikers Lautaro Martinez and Edin Dzeko have shipped in 13 goals and six assists, while Nicolo Barella is thriving at a more advanced role since he has scored the most goals among Serie A midfielders this term with five thus far.

Another win for the Nerazzurri stretches their winning streak to five league games. But more importantly, they can reclaim the second seed, especially if Atalanta, AC Milan, AS Roma, and Lazio all lose their games this weekend.

History

Inter Milan could win two Serie A games in a row versus Juventus for the first time since 2003/04 this Sunday. They beat I Bianconeri 1-0 during their last league meeting in April, as Hakan Calhanoglu netted the marginal goal before the halftime break.

The Nerazzurri also defeated I Bianconeri 4-2 a month later to win the Coppa Italia, as Nicolo Barella, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Ivan Perisic (twice) outscored Alex Sandro and Dusan Vlahovic.

Simone Inzaghi also has the chance to become the first Inter Milan manager since Helenio Herrera (3 between 1961 and 1965) to beat Juventus on the road twice in Serie A.

Furthermore, if Inter Milan’s defence holds up, Juventus could fail to score in back-to-back Serie A meetings against them for the first time since 2010 (2-0 in April and 0-0 in October). They were beaten in two such matches without scoring in 1962/63.

Betting Tip

Matches between Inter Milan and Juventus are hotly-contested and this one is going to be no different.

The SBOTOP Serie A 2022 odds have given Inter Milan the slight edge at 2.42, but Juventus aren’t far behind at 2.83 and chances for a draw are at 3.30 in the 1X2 market.

Both sides look evenly matched on paper and they’re going to cancel each out. Under 2.50 @ 1.88 is your best bet here, while a Correct Score of 1-1 @ 5.40 can give you a decent payout.
