Premier League: Underrated Transfers in the Summer Window

countdown banner

The 2022-23 summer transfer window is finally done and dusted. There’s been a number of high-profile moves made in the Premier League which amounts to an exorbitant gross spending of £1.9-B, surpassing the previous record by £487.8-M during the summer and January windows of the 2017-18 season.

Manchester City, United, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal have taken a large portion of the spotlight with their transfers involving Erling Haaland, Antony, Kalidou Koulibaly, Raheem Sterling, and Gabriel Jesus. However, several other clubs have done their homework in landing their own set of targets to improve their Premier League 2022 odds.

Now that the new season is underway, read on below as SBOTOP highlights five new English top-flight signings who went under the radar this summer.

Sven Botman, Newcastle United

After two productive seasons with Lille, Sven Botman has finally arrived in the Premier League after being linked with a host of top English top-flight clubs over the past 12 months.

The 22-year-old is a towering presence at centre-half since he stands at 6’4”, which makes him an asset particularly at attacking or defending set-pieces.

Botman has started for four out of the first seven top-flight fixtures thus far, but he was an unused substitute in their most recent game against Bournemouth as Eddie Howe opted to play Dan Burn and Fabian Schar instead.

He was called up to play for Netherlands’ U-21 friendly matches with Belgium and Romania during the international break, but he decided to remain in Tyneside to fight for a starting spot which just goes to show his determination.

Taiwo Awoniyi, Nottingham Forest

Taiwo Awoniyi is back at the Premier League and he will not take his second stint for granted.

The Nigerian striker was formerly a Liverpool player but it didn’t quite work out on Merseyside, primarily due to work permit issues. However, he enjoyed his time at Union Berlin with a good return of 20 goals in 52 appearances in the last two years, and he led them to securing a place in Europe last season.

He is one of Nottingham Forest’s most notable acquisitions this summer and he has already established himself as their focal point up front. Awoniyi is currently their top scorer with two goals in eight games played.

Cheick Doucoure, Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace fought hard to get Cheick Doucoure’s signature this summer and it’s not hard to see the reason why.

The Malian international is excellent in winning the ball back and creating attacking opportunities. Plus, he’s only 22 years old so he’s only going to get better under the guidance of Patrick Vieira – who’s also a solid midfielder himself back in the day.

Doucoure made 34 Ligue 1 appearances for Lens last term as they finished seventh place in France’s top-flight. He is Palace’s third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Malcolm Ebiowei and Sam Johnstone.

He has started in all of the Eagles’ six Premier League games and he will certainly play a key role for them this season.

Christian Eriksen, Manchester United

Manchester United fans are certainly happier nowadays with their positive run of Premier League 2022 results, and much of their success can be owed to Christian Eriksen.

The Danish ace is looking more at home in the Red Devils’ midfield alongside Scott McTominay across the last few weeks.

And despite having yet to score this season, he was awarded as the team’s Player of the Month for September. He’s also arguably the Man of the Match in their most recent victory over Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League with his assist to Jadon Sancho’s opening goal.

Eriksen could’ve had his first goal in Manchester United uniform in their 3-1 win over Arsenal, but he instead teed up Marcus Rashford during a key counterattack sequence – which is the kind of unselfishness that boosts everyone’s morale.

Oh, and did we mention that he was signed for free? That alone makes him one of the bargain signings this summer.

Marc Roca, Leeds United

Marc Roca is enjoying his new lease on life at Leeds United

He has been a guaranteed starter under Jesse Marsch and he’s been doing his best to make the Yorkshire faithful forget about the recently departed Kalvin Phillips by forming a strong partnership with Tyler Adams in the midfield.

The 25-year-old struggled to break into Bayern Munich’s starting lineup after a move from Espanyol in 2020. But now at Elland Road, Roca can get his career back on track with regular playing time as he tries to achieve his full potential.
