Premier League: Tottenham Without Their Talisman Are Still Potent

countdown banner

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

The Spurs will march to Goodison Park and lock horns with the Toffees for a good ol’ Premier League clash.

Still without Son, Tottenham are keen on keeping their Champions League dreams alive with a win against the lowly Toffees. Their resilience without their skipper has been admirable and shouldn’t be left unnoticed. They’re rubbing elbows with the top clubs in the Premier League, and an impending threat brought by Aston Villa in the standings should keep the Spurs sharp.

Meanwhile, Everton desperately need points after slipping into the bottom three of the standings, just above Burnley and Sheffield United. It would be a spectacle at Goodison Park if the Toffees could claw their way out of the relegation zone in front of their loyal and spirited fans.

Talking Points

The Toffees have a lot on their plate

46 shots were attempted between Fulham and Everton in their Matchday 22 bout, but none of them found the back of the net, ending the game with a 0-0 draw. Elsewhere, Luton Town appeared in the Premier League 2024 news headlines after stunning Brighton with a glorious 4-0 victory.

Because of these results, Everton slipped down to the 18th spot in the Premier League table. And by failing to garner a top-flight win since December 10, it’s not surprising that the Toffees are where they are in the table.

With just 18 points to their name, Everton are in the relegation zone with Burnley and Sheffield United. The Toffees, unfortunately, are on a steady decline. They’ve been finishing lower and lower in the league standings since their 10th-place finish in the 2020–21 season.

It doesn’t help that they’re also facing controversy off the pitch as they begin their appeal in their fight against the 10-point Premier League penalty, a sanction they face for violating the league’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

Luckily for the Toffees and their fans, there is still a lot of football left to be played this season, and they’re just one win away from possibly propelling two spots up the standings. But as of now, Everton, a Premier League staple, are in danger of trickling down to the Championship.

Spurs are faring well without Son

Ange Postecoglou and the rest of Tottenham are faring pretty well despite the absence of their talisman, Heung-min Son.

Son is currently with the Taegeuk Warriors in the AFC Asian Cup, where they’re on their way to the quarterfinal after edging out Saudi Arabia in the Round of 16 via penalties. This means that Tottenham will have to be without their skipper for their Premier League bout against struggling Everton.

Ever since the departure of Son, the Spurs beat Burnley in the 3rd round of the FA Cup, levelled with Manchester United, and triumphed over Brentford in the Premier League. But they sure missed him during their 0-1 defeat against Manchester City in the 4th round of the FA Cup.

To be fair, Postecoglou and his boys are doing alright. It helps that Richarlison has stepped up in the goal-scoring department, netting a goal in both Premier League clashes against Manchester United and Brentford.

Due to their exit from the FA Cup, Tottenham can now focus on staying in the upper echelon of the Premier League and qualifying for European competition next term, a redemption arc from their 8th-seed finish last season.

They’re poised for a UEFA Champions League appearance, as they’re currently in fourth place. But they can’t afford to slack off even a little because Aston Villa are right on their tails.

History

In their last matchup, the Spurs were able to bag the win thanks to a first-half goal by Son to put them up by two goals. But this time around, the Korean international won’t be available for Tottenham because of international duties.

Since 1995, these Premier League staples have faced off against each other 59 times. Among them, the Spurs won the majority with 26 wins, while the Toffees have won just 10 and were able to tally a draw 23 times.

In recent form, Tottenham are poised for European football action next season, given that they keep the same pace going towards the end of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Everton have seen brighter days, as they’re currently in the relegation zone after their pedestrian performance against Fulham last week.

Betting Tip

The SBOTOP Premier League 2024 odds have this match priced closer than I would’ve thought. The Spurs are the slight favourites to win at 2.31, which holds tremendous value, in my opinion. And the Toffees are the underdogs at 2.65 with a draw price of 3.40. To have a top-four club at 2.32 against an outfit in the relegation zone is undeniably a steal. I would also like to point out that the goals under 2.75 at 2.06 also possess immense value, given that Tottenham won’t have their top goal scorer in Son, and Everton as a whole have only managed to tally 24 total goals this season thus far.
