Premier League: The Table Gets Tighter in the English Top-Flight

countdown banner

With 10 games in the books in the English top-flight, the Premier League table is starting to take shape. It’s looking like football fans will be pleased, as multiple teams are currently neck and neck in the top half of the table.

The defending champions, Manchester City, dropped two matches in their last five league fixtures, which caused them to drop to third with 24 points. Tied with City, the Gunners are in second place after their Match day 10 thrashing of Sheffield United with a score line of 5-0. The Sky Blues and Arsenal are separated by just one goal.

Aston Villa are making an early push to improve their seventh-place finish last season by staying undefeated in their last five league games. But their early strides will be tested even more next month when they play against strong adversaries like Manchester City, Arsenal, and Manchester United.

Tottenham stay atop the league table

The departure of prolific English striker Harry Kane raised a bunch of question marks for the Spurs before the season started, but Son and the boys seem to be doing just fine. Tottenham look rejuvenated and hungrier this season, with captain Son Heung-min leading the way for the club by scoring eight goals in 10 games with a goal conversion rate of 50 per cent.

After their away victory against Crystal Palace last weekend, the Spurs are now undefeated in the month of October in the English top-flight. In fact, Tottenham and Arsenal are the only teams remaining in the Premier League that have yet to concede a match.

Ange Postecoglou’s team has won four of their last five matches, which included clean sheets against Fulham, Luton Town, and a 5-2 demolition job versus Burley at Turf Moor.

Their success is evidently rooted in their sound system, chemistry, and how their summer signing, James Maddison, meshes well with Postecoglou’s system. Maddison turned out to be the best summer signing in the Premier League this season, as his addition to the Spurs immediately and exponentially heightened the club’s form.

The 26-year-old midfielder signed with Tottenham for £40 million from relegated Leicester. Despite the club’s relegation, he scored ten Premier League goals in his final season for Leicester, where he also won the FA Cup and Community Shield.

It’s too early to say if Tottenham’s dominance will continue all throughout this year’s campaign, but as the SBOTOP Premier League 2023 odds suggest, they are definitely one of the contenders to win it all this season.

Manchester City crush the Red Devils in derby

United hosted the reigning champions at Old Trafford for a classic Manchester Derby. The Red Devils were building quite the momentum coming into the derby, as they defeated Brentford, Sheffield United, and even won a Champions League match against Copenhagen.

But faithful fans at Old Trafford were quickly dismayed as the visitors dominated their rivals in every facet of the game. Who else but Erling Haaland led the charge for the Sky Blues, as he scored the opening goal of the match from the penalty spot after a VAR was called for a possible foul inside the box.

Manchester City’s Phil Foden celebrates scoring their third goal with Erling Haaland during the Premier League match

Haaland powerfully slotted the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal to put his team in the lead. It wasn’t long for the Sky Blues to double their lead, as Haaland found the back of the net yet again with a close-range header in the early minutes of the second half. Phil Foden put the nail on the coffin when we gingerly tapped the ball into the net coming from a short cross from Haaland to put City up with three goals

It looked evident that Manchester United were simply outmatched and outplayed by Pep Guardiola’s squad. They lacked synchronization and didn’t seem to be as hungry for the win compared to the Sky Blues. The only convincing chance they had was midway through the second half, when Marcus Rashford had a wonderful opportunity to keep United in the game but was unable to capitalize after finding space in behind.

The derby finished win a score line of 0-3, and with this defeat, Ten Hag’s team finds themselves in the eighth spot in the league table, while Manchester City stay in the top three, with Liverpool just a point below them.

The Lions continue their dominance in Villa Park

Villa Park becoming an impenetrable fortress has been one of the top Premier League 2023 news this season. After their recent 3-1 win against Luton Town, The Villans now have a 12-game winning streak at Villa Park. They are one game shy in tying the club record of 13-game win streak set by the 1983 squad.

Villa’s success comes from a perfect balance of aggressive attacks and a sound defence, as their win against Luton Town showcased both. “Very satisfied. These three points are very important for us. Only I can be not very happy with the goal we conceded because it was a strange mistake,” Unai Emery said after the match.

With the Villans now threatening a top-four spot, head coach Emery kept a focus mindset, and a structured response when addressing their current spot on the league table, “We are between another seven teams, they show their power consistently. But if we are working like that and doing this process, being demanding, being strong, of course we can progress and still keep the moment we have now in the table.”
