Premier League: Spurs Ready for An East End Knees Up

countdown banner

West Ham United vs Tottenham Hotspur

Premier League football returns to the London Stadium on Tuesday night when Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur visit West Ham United.

Hammers boss David Moyes cut a frustrated figure on Saturday as he watched his side throw away a 3-1 lead against Newcastle on Saturday and leave Tyneside empty handed, while Spurs kept up their top four challenge thanks to a 2-1 victory over Luton Town.

Postecoglou’s side will start the game in fifth place after Aston Villa beat Wolves in the late Saturday kick-off and the latest Premier League 2024 betting odds say that particular battle will go down to the wire. The Villains have a three point advantage but Spurs have a game in hand. If the Hammers had held on to a win in Newcastle they would have climbed to within a point of Manchester United in sixth, but should Brighton beat Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, Moyes’ boys could drop to eighth.

We’re promised an East End bash but it won’t be very friendly as Premier League 2024 results are the only thing that matter right now.

Talking Points

Bowen vs Son

Two of the Premier League’s hot shots will come face to face on Tuesday night when Heung Min Son and Jarrod Bowen will both be determined to increase their goal tallies which currently stand at 15. They both hit the target on Saturday and are in joint fourth position in the chase for the Premier League Golden Boot.

Son’s fans will point out that the Korean has made eight assists to Bowens four and he’s the club’s go to match winner since Harry Kane hot footed it off to Munich. He scored a late winner in Spurs’ victory over the Hatters and it won a crucial three points after his team fell to a crushing 3-0 defeat to Fulham before the international break. Son’s goal was his 160th for Tottenham and he has now become the club’s fifth highest goal scorer of all time.

While Tottenham fans were celebrating the Hammers’ long trip up to Newcastle turned out to be a nightmare for their travelling fans as they watched their team go into the final quarter of an hour with a two goal lead after Michail Antonio, Mohammed Kudus and Bowen all breached the Magpies’ defence with the only early goal coming from Alexander Isak.

West Ham United star Jarrod Bowen celebrates after scoring a goal during Premier League match against Manchester United in 2023

Bowen’s 15th goal of the campaign made him West Ham’s highest scorer in a single Premier League season since the legendary Paulo di Canio scored 16 in 1999/2000. Bowen will surely beat that total and, if he does he will give the Hammers a good chance of returning to Europe next season. He also made an assist in the loss to Newcastle but Bowen would have much preferred to see help his team see the match out. Moyes brought on Kalvin Phillips to shore up the midfield but it had the opposite effect as Isak scored his second from the penalty spot and the recently returned Harvey Barnes scored a late, late double to break the Hammers’ hearts.

Moyes was philosophical in the aftermath, saying: “We looked a real threat in our attacking play; we just couldn’t be defensively sound and, let’s be fair, we’ve had that issue many times this season.”

In Spurs’ recent clash with Fulham they looked fragile in defence too and so we could see plenty of goals when the two teams meet on Tuesday. Bowen is making a good case for a place at Euro 2024 and he and Son will be setting their sights at 8-15 pm.

History

Spurs are leading the head to heads by 30 to 21 and there have been 11 draws in all competitions since 1993; but West Ham won 2-1 at Spurs in December as Bowen and James Ward-Prowse scored for the Hammers.

And Tottenham come into the game in better form with four wins and two losses from the last six games, while West Ham have won two, drawn two and lost two.

Betting Tip

West Ham are priced at 2.80 by SBOTOP with Tottenham fancied to edge the game, though the draw is in there too at a price of 3.58.

The West Ham double chance, win or draw is available at 1.74 but I just think the visitors have a touch more momentum after the weekend’s results and Son will be smiling on Tuesday night.
