Premier League: Reds Seek Confidence Boost From Lacklustre Wolves

Liverpool vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

It’s been a rough week for Premier League leaders Liverpool, so they’re seeking a morale-boosting victory when they head back home to Anfield to host the Wolverhampton Wanderers this Sunday evening.

Arne Slot’s men suffered a shocking 1-0 FA Cup defeat against Plymouth Argyle, the 23rd in the Championship last Sunday, and it was followed by a 2-2 stalemate against Everton at Goodison Park yesterday. Despite these setbacks, Liverpool remain well ahead in the English top-flight table, with at least a seven-point lead over the rest of the chasing pack.

The Wolves mercifully ended their losing skid with a 2-0 upset victory over Aston Villa, and they didn’t drop their FA Cup match against Blackburn Rovers (2-0). Vitor Pereira’s side still has one foot near the drop zone, at 17th in the table with 19 points.

Talking Points

Diaz’s barren run is a concern for Liverpool

Liverpool have been doing well despite their complicated contract situations with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, and recent reports claim that Luis Diaz is also keen on a move away from Anfield. The Colombian striker is contracted with the Reds until 2027, so there’s no rush from the front office to sell him.

Diaz has been a key player for Arne Slot this 2024-25 season, notching 12 goals and three assists in 34 appearances across all competitions. However, his form has tailed off in recent weeks, with his last goal dating back to the team’s 5-0 victory against West Ham United last December. The 28-year-old couldn’t find the back of the net against Everton, and he was subbed off for Diogo Jota. A match against the third-worst defence in the league this weekend could cure his ills.

Whether Diaz regains his form or not, Mohamed Salah will continue to lead the Reds. The Egyptian forward is one of the top contenders for the Golden Boot award, as he already has 22 league goals and 14 assists.

Trent Alexander-Arnold might get recalled by Slot after getting benched against the Toffees. Curtis Jones will be missed since he’ll have to serve his suspension after getting sent off.

Cunha deserves his new Wolves deal

The Wolves gave Matheus Cunha a four-year contract extension, and the Brazilian quickly rewarded them with an unlikely win over Aston Villa. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde scored the first goal before Cunha sealed the deal in stoppage time.

The Wolves initially signed Cunha on loan from Atletico Madrid in December 2022, but the team made it permanent because of his fine performances. The 25-year-old has scored 11 goals and four assists in 23 Premier League appearances this season to lead the squad.

Cunha is expected to continue leading the Wolves out of the relegation zone, but he can’t do it alone. He’ll need support from Jorgen Strand Larsen, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Joao Gomes, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, and Goncalo Guedes, who combine for 16 league goals and 14 assists this season. The Wolves also need more from backup striker Hwang Hee-Chan, who only has two league goals this term.

History

Liverpool and Wolves have already squared off earlier this season. Liverpool notched a 2-1 win over the Wolves at Molineux last September, as Ibrahima Konate and Mohamed Salah scored for the visitors while Rayan Ait-Nouri scored for the hosts. The Reds have won 15 of their last 16 Premier League encounters with the Wolves, except for a 3-0 loss at Molineux last February 2023.

The Wolves have lost nine of their 10 Premier League matches against Liverpool at Anfield, with their last triumph being a 1-0 result in December 2010 under Mick McCarthy. They have also lost all seven of their Premier League away matches against sides starting the matchday at the top of the table.

Betting Tip

The Premier League 2025 odds predict a straightforward result for the hosts this weekend. Liverpool are 1.19 favourites to win, while the Wolves are massive 9.40 underdogs, and a draw is at 6.30 in the 1X2 market. A defeat or draw for Arne Slot’s side will give teams like Arsenal and Nottingham Forest a sliver of hope in the title race.

SBOTOP football fans will see some new Premier League 2025 highlights from this fixture, with Liverpool likely to score more goals. Besides our recommended bet, bettors can also go for Over 3.25 at 1.78, Over 3.50 at 1.95, Over 3.75 at 2.19, and even Total Goal 4-6 at 2.18. However, a Correct Score of 2-1 in favour of the Reds – the result of the reverse fixture – has a generous 9.60 offer.
