Premier League: Rampant Geordies Are Ready for the Wolves

Newcastle United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

With a full programme of Premier League football to feast our eyes on this week the SBOTOP team is busy as ever and, for a writer who loves the English game…this is as good as it gets! And what a clash we have in store in the frozen North East on Wednesday when high flying Newcastle United welcome a resurgent Wolverhampton Wanderers to St James’ Park. Eddie Howe’s Magpies are on a superb run of eight consecutive wins, in all competitions, a sequence which has taken them into the fourth round of the FA Cup, given them a healthy lead in the Carabao Cup semi-final and Newcastle are up to fifth place in the Premier League.

This is a daunting task for the visitors but Wolves have improved lately under new manager Vitor Pereira and their need for points is as great as their hosts, as they sit in 17th place and are desperate to pull away from the drop zone.

Both teams won their FA Cup matches at the weekend, Newcastle coming from behind to beat League Two side Bromley, while Wolves navigated a tricky tie with a 2-1 victory away to Bristol City.

Talking Points

Full strength Newcastle is a force to be reckoned with

Eddie Howe’s Magpies are soaring at the moment with an outstanding set of results, since the beginning of December, including big league wins over Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Aston Villa and a hugely impressive 2-0 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates to take a firm grip on their Carabao Cup semi-final. Not everybody, inside Newcastle and elsewhere, were optimistic of the Geordies’ prospects this season after a seventh placed finish last term and a difficult time in the transfer market, and with injuries.

But they look to be heading towards a cup final and, though the latest Premier League 2025 betting odds still predict a sixth place finish, Newcastle are just a point behind Chelsea in fourth and have serious momentum. With world class stars Sven Botman and Sandro Tonali returning to bolster the defence and midfield, there is quality throughout the team. Bruno Guimaraes is a real force as an attacking midfielder while Alexander Isak, with 13 goals from 18 games, is now one of the hottest properties in the European game. And with supply for the Swede coming from Antony Gordon and Jacob Murphy who’d bet against him racing past 20 before the season is out.

Newcastle fans are renowned for their eternal optimism and can be prone to bouts of giddiness, but why not the way things look up there right now?

Cunha available for Wolves

With a win against Newcastle United, Wolves can improve their 17th position in the Premier League
Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa and Wolves’ Matheus Cunha in action during a Premier League clash in September 2024

After serving a two match suspension for his after-match altercation with Ipswich Town backroom staff, following a 2-1 defeat to the Tractor Boys, star striker Matheus Cunha is cleared to play against Newcastle. This is big Premier League 2025 news this week as the Magpies are one of a number of top clubs tracking the Brazilian with a view to making a move in summer, and they will not be delighted to be lining up against him on Wednesday.

This has been a break-out season for Cunha who has scored ten league goals and led the Wolves line impressively and he has sat out the two game ban, when Wolves met high flying Nottingham Forest last week and lost, without scoring, and in the FA Cup victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate. The loss to Forest was the only setback for Pereira since his arrival, with wins over Leicester City and Manchester United and a draw with Tottenham; and a return for Cunha is a big moment for Wolves.

History

Newcastle have won eight of their last 24 meetings with Wolves, while the Midlanders have won five and there have been 11 draws. When they met back in September the Magpies took all three points from Molineux as a scorcher from Harvey Barnes decided the outcome in a 2-1 win.

Take a look at the last six games and you get a clear picture of where these two teams are currently at; Newcastle have won all six, while Wolves have won three, drawn one and lost two.

Betting Tip

With Newcastle at 1.36 to win this looks like a home banker; but a draw at 4.82 isn’t out of the question and nor is, for the All Gold fans, a Wolves raid at 6.09. The visitors are only out of the bottom three on goal difference but, since the arrival of Pereira they have attacked and scored freely, and the Magpies are full of goals…so this is a game I’ll be watching.
