Antonio Conte’s tumultuous tenure at Tottenham Hotspur has taken another spectacular turn. The Italian went on a spectacular rant slamming his players and the club after their 3-3 draw with bottom-side Southampton.
Following his latest tirade, it’s starting to feel as if Conte’s time at Tottenham – and the Premier League – is coming to an end.
Meanwhile, a couple of England international midfielders are being linked with big moves, and Chelsea could have a shock replacement lined up for one of them.
Read on below as SBOTOP has rounded up all of the latest and greatest pieces of Premier League news and updates.
Antonio Conte goes off on Spurs, ‘selfish’ players
Antonio Conte did not hold back his displeasure at his players after they surrendered a two-goal lead in a 3-3 draw with Premier League cellar-dwellers Southampton.
Conte slammed his players for being ‘selfish’ and criticised the club as a whole for their lack of success over the years.
“We are 11 players that go into the pitch. I see selfish players, I see players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart (in),” said Conte.
“Why? Because they are used to it here, they are used to it. They don’t play for something important. They don’t want to play under pressure, they don’t want to play under stress.
“It is easy in this way. Tottenham’s story is this. Twenty years there is the owner and they never won something but why? The fault is only for the club, or for every manager that stays here. I have seen the managers that Tottenham had on the bench.”
Conte, who has won five league titles during his times with Juventus, Chelsea, and Inter Milan, only agreed to an 18-month contract upon joining Spurs in November 2021, and the deal is set to expire in June 2023.
But with the way things are trending with him and his relationship with his players and the club, it seems as if a parting of ways is inevitable – if not in the summer, then even sooner.
Chelsea prefer Andreas Pereira as potential Mason Mount replacement
After going on a massive spending spree in the last few transfer windows, Chelsea could now potentially lose a key player in midfielder Mason Mount.
Mount is under contract until 2024, but his contract extension talks have reportedly stalled, causing Chelsea’s competitors to circle as they look to lure the England international away from Stamford Bridge.
And should the Blues decide to cash in on Mount before his contract runs out, they might already have their preferred Mount replacement in mind in the form of Fulham’s Andreas Pereira.
Pereira is having a fine debut season for Fulham, who have been defying the Premier League 2023 odds for most of the campaign. The 27-year-old has been a key part of their success, with two goals and a team-leading six assists in 27 Premier League starts.
Man City confident in signing Jude Bellingham
And in other massive England midfielder news, Manchester City are reportedly confident they will win the race to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham in the summer.
The 19-year-old Bellingham has been linked with many of the top clubs in Europe over the last few years, including Liverpool and Manchester United, but City and Real Madrid are reportedly his most likely destinations should he leave this summer.
Bellingham is having another brilliant season for Dortmund, who are currently top of the Bundesliga. The 19-year-old has got four goals and four assists in 24 Bundesliga appearances.
City’s last big purchase from Borussia Dortmund has gone quite well as Erling Haaland has been scoring goals for fun in his first season in the Premier League. And Bellingham’s arrival should strengthen the Citizens even further.
Roy Hodgson set to replace Patrick Vieira at Crystal Palace
Roy Hodgson is closing in on a deal to take charge at Crystal Palace for the remainder of the season, per Sky Sports.
Hodgson will replace Patrick Vieira, who was sacked on March 17 after going on a disastrous run of Premier League 2023 results.
The 75-year-old previously managed the Eagles from September 2017 to May 2021 and had a record of 54 wins, 38 draws, and 70 defeats in 162 games.
U21s head coach Paddy McCarthy was in the dugout during Palace’s 4-1 defeat to Arsenal, which was their fourth straight Premier League defeat.
Palace are currently 12th in the Premier League table but are just three points clear of the relegation zone.
