Manchester United vs Aston Villa
Manchester United will have another game at Old Trafford this Saturday as they’ll get to host Aston Villa for the sixth matchday of the 2021/22 season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are joint leaders with Chelsea and Liverpool at the table with 13 points. And overall, they’ve been solid so far in the Premier League.
But the same can’t be said for their visitors as they’re sitting at 10th with only seven points. Dean Smith’s side has yet to find consistency and they’re in need of a positive result here.
United and Villa were dumped out of the Carabao Cup yesterday so both clubs are planning to vent their ire when they’ll clash at Old Trafford.
The early SBOTOP betting odds favour the Red Devils since they’ve been the better club against the Villans in recent occasions.
But given the Red Devils’ patchy overall form recently, they will be wary of the threat that the Villans pose especially with the top spot at the table on the line this weekend.
Talking Points
Manchester United’s key players are rested
Manchester United are in need of a boost after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup third round by West Ham United last Wednesday night – the same opponents who they also defeated in the few days prior.
In the said fixture, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to give more playing time to their bench players since the Red Devils have already played three matches in just a span of 10 days.
Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard, Donny van de Beek, and Juan Mata made rare starts while Alex Telles and Dean Henderson made their first appearances this season after a long layoff.
However, they couldn’t get it done as they were struck by Manuel Lanzini’s ninth-minute score. United had 27 shot chances but they were wasteful in front of goal.
With the quartet of Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood, and Paul Pogba back, we expect United to be more clinical this time around.
Ronaldo, who is their leading scorer with four goals, should have no problems adding to his account once more against the Villans. Their defence and midfield, however, still has a lot of question marks.
Aston Villa’s new boys paying dividends
Aston Villa have coped well without Jack Grealish, who moved to the Etihad for a whopping fee in the last transfer window.
They’ve tried to compensate by adding Danny Ings, Emiliano Buendia, and Leon Bailey – and the trio have already made an impact for the club. Bailey and Buendia have scored one goal each while Ings has recorded two goals and two assists.
Buendia has been solid at the No. 10 role while Bailey has formed a formidable wing tandem with Anwar El Ghazi. Ings, on the other hand, adjusted his game to turn into an uncompromising pressing machine for Villa.
Dean Smith has done a commendable job in integrating his new guys into his system and they’ll look to keep it going in their next few games.
The Villans were able to push Chelsea to the limit at the third round of the Carabao Cup yesterday. And although they lost via penalties, Villa can be satisfied knowing that they give it their best despite not fielding in their best starting XI.
History
Manchester United have been utterly dominant versus Aston Villa especially at Old Trafford. In their last 21 home games against the Villans, the Red Devils have won 18 of them (D2, L1) and they’ve only failed to score once in that span.
Overall, Aston Villa have picked up just one victory in their last 45 English top-flight games against Manchester United. Their last win dates back to December 2009 via 1-0 tally.
The previous meeting between these two sides took place last May where Manchester United won 3-1.
Bertrand Traore put the Villans ahead through his early goal, but it was nullified by second half scores from Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood, and Edinson Cavani.
