Premier League: Red Devils Set to Blunt The Blades

countdown banner

Manchester United vs Sheffield United

Manchester United’s top four push continues on Wednesday when Sheffield United are the visitors to Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils have already lost a little ground in the race for Europe after opening their restart campaign with a draw, so nothing less than a victory over Chris Wilders’ Blades will do.

By the time we know the outcome of Premier League; Manchester United vs Sheffield United on Wednesday night, the picture could look brighter for the hosts and they might be within two points of fourth placed Chelsea, with the Blues set to face Manchester City on Thursday night.

The latest Manchester United vs Sheffield United betting odds say it should be a home win, but Wilders’ battlers have already caused a few upsets this season.

Talking Points

Solskjaer’s big players must perform

Manchester United’s opener against Spurs was the first time we have seen Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba play together, after the enigmatic Frenchman made a second half appearance. And it was probably the best 30 minutes we’ve seen from Pogba in United’s colours this season. All too often he has gone missing in games, but he was in dominant mood against Spurs and changed the match when he won a penalty.

That outcome was a relief to goalkeeper David de Gea who was blamed, in some quarters, for his role in Spurs’ opener. Steven Bergwijn’s shot was powerful, but close to the Spaniard and it went through him and into the roof of he net. De Gea has been criticised for a number of howlers over the past 12 months and he needs to rule them out, but I’d also ask why centre back Harry Maguire was beaten so easily by the Spurs’ striker. Bergwijn simply glided past the England man who looked like he was running through treacle.

Up front Anthony Martial was ineffective, as was Marcus Rashford, who may need another game or two to get fully match fit.

Chelsea’s victory over Aston Villa has extended the Blues lead over the Red Devils to five points, and that has increased the pressure on Manchester United. It’s time for their big players to show their worth.

Can the Blades challenge for Europe?

Chris Wilder’s Blades are just two points behind Manchester United in the Premier League table and a win on Wednesday would see them swap places. They have exceeded everyone’s expectations this season, starting well and then refusing to fade, mocking their status as pre-season favourites to go down.

Sheffield are a hard working team without stars, though goal-keeper Dean Henderson, on loan from Manchester United, has been brilliant, keeping 11 clean sheets. The Blades play without fear, with attacking centre backs, but they don’t have a proven goal scorer and find it difficult to break teams down.

Lys Mousset and John Fleck have managed five goals each, while Oli McBurnie and John Lundstram have four and veteran striker Billy Sharp has three. But with only 30 goals all season, the Blades rely heavily on their defence, and they’ll be without John Egan who saw red in Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

History

The historic Manchester United vs Sheffield United results have been one-sided, and the hosts will hope that trend continues.

Manchester United have won all but one of the last six meetings, though the Blades’ one share of the points came in a November 3-3 draw at Bramall Lane in one of the games of the season. The Red Devils were all over the place as Wilder’s team set about them, and were 2-0 down shortly after half time when Mousset scored. Three goals in seven minutes looked to have saved United’s blushes, but Oli McBurnie equalised in the 90th minute after an agonising wait for VAR to check he hadn’t handled the ball.

Betting Tip

Manchester United vs Sheffield United Total Goals 2-3 @ 1.94
June 25, 01:00 (GMT+8)

I expect Manchester United to win this game. Here at SBOBET the Red Devils are at 1.43 to take all three points, while the draw is at 4.30 and Sheffield United at 7.40 to spring yet another surprise.

The Blades have over-performed, no doubt, and have looked rather toothless since their return, but Wilder will have them primed to give Manchester United a tough game. There looks to be some value in the Red Devils winning with a -1.25 handicap at odds of 2.06, but I’m hedging my bets.

For a score-line 2-0 is at odds of 5.60, and if Pogba and co put on a show that’s well within reach.
