Burnley vs Liverpool
We have a Lancashire Hotpot to enjoy for Saturday dinner (UK time) when Premier League Burnley vs Liverpool is the offering.
The league leaders away to a mid-table side, hard to beat on its own Turf, is a mouth-watering prospect and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will make sure his team is ready. Sean Dyche is leading Burnley in its fourth consecutive season in the top flight and the fifth in six, and he has gradually added quality to his squad, carefully bringing creativity in to complement a solid and well organised defence.
The latest Burnley vs Liverpool betting odds point to an away win, which would mean the Reds making it four from four, but as all the top six teams know, it’s never quite that simple at Turf Moor.
Talking Points
Bad blood
The Burnley vs Liverpool news hasn’t always made gentle reading in recent years, and things came to a head when the two bosses disagreed how the game should be played, at the back end of 2018.
Last season’s tussle at Turf Moor ended Liverpool centre back Joe Gomez’ season as he suffered a broken leg following a tackle by Burnley defender Ben Mee. It was a fair challenge which ended unfortunately as Gomez slid into the advertising hoardings, but that didn’t placate Jurgen, saying Burnley’s hard tackling approach to the game wasn’t fair. That sparked a war of words with Sean Dyche who said he’d rather have a team of honest tacklers than one with players who dive to win free-kicks, calling Pool’s Daniel Sturridge a ‘cheat’ for doing so.
So expect a hostile atmosphere at Turf Moor on Saturday, and maybe even one or two hard tackles from the visitors.
Liverpool’s perfect start
The Reds overcame their toughest task so far with a 3-1 win over Arsenal, after the Gunners had won their first two games of the campaign. And they have the firepower to beat most sides without resorting to rough tactics.
Mo Salah has three goals so far, including a double in the victory over Arsenal, while Roberto Firmino has been in excellent form in support. But while Klopp knows his team is capable of dismantling the most stubborn of defences, he knows his own rearguard will be tested by Burnley’s front men. Virgil Van Dijk will be a key figure for the Reds in negating the aerial threat they are likely to face.
Aye Aye Ashley
Burnley’s only defeat so far came in a 2-1 reversal away to Arsenal when Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang bagged a winner after Ashley Barnes had drawn the Clarets level. That was one of the striker’s four goals so far and he already looks certain to hit double figures for the third season in a row.
Only Sergio Aguero and Sadio Mane have scored more league goals than the Burnley man in 2019 after he bagged his 12th from 18 games, not bad for a £450,000 buy from Brighton. Known for his all-action and abrasive style he is also a sublime finisher, scoring a beauty away to Wolves last week. Strike partner Chris Wood hit double figures last year but is yet to get off the mark, and with summer signing Jay Rodriguez waiting for his turn there is plenty of competition for places.
History
The Clarets come into the game on the back of an EFL Cup loss to third tier Sunderland. It was the sixth season in a row that Burnley had been dumped out of the League Cup by lower league opposition. Though Dyche had made ten changes he would have expected his second string to have enough quality, but it means the team which has started all three games so far is likely to take the pitch again on Saturday.
Liverpool is on a winning streak of four and has won the last four away from home.
The head to heads have been dominated by the Reds, winning eight of the 11 meetings since 2005, with Burnley triumphing twice and there has been a single draw. The Clarets have failed to win any of the last three.
But the Reds haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last six games, conceding one in each of their three Premier League wins.
Betting Tip
Burnley vs Liverpool | Burnley Asian Handicap +1.50 @ 1.88 | |
September 04, 00:30 (GMT+8) |
For a home team to be at 9.00 to win you’d say this could be a mismatch, and Burnley will be hoping their opponents fall into that trap. The draw is available with SBOBET at odds of 4.60 and Liverpool is at 1.35.
I think the Reds will come out on top, but probably by the odd goal. Liverpool is 2.05 with that -1.50 goals handicap.
And for a score-line, 1-2 at 7.80 will give Liverpool the win they need and Burnley the goal they expect.
