Premier League: Leeds Look for First Win at Struggling Burnley

Burnley vs Leeds United

Leeds United are still searching for their first win in the new Premier League season. After their away heavy defeat to Manchester United, they battled to an entertaining 2-2 draw against Everton at Elland Road.

But the Whites will like their chances of collecting their first win of the campaign as they travel to Turf Moor to take on a struggling Burnley side.

The Clarets are currently fourth from bottom after back-to-back defeats in their first two games. They have also failed to pick up good results at home, which is another reason why the Premier League 2021 betting odds are tilting toward the visitors.

Talking Points

Leeds still delivering the goals

Leeds United have begun this season like they did the last: playing in games with a lot of goals. In their first two games last season, they were on either end of two 4-3 shootouts against Liverpool and Fulham.

This time around, their first two games have already seen 10 goals, second-most in the league. After their heavy 5-1 defeat to Manchester United, they came from behind twice to pick up a 2-2 draw against Everton.

Leeds dominated 70 per cent of possession and created 17 shots as Everton were content to sit back and defend deep. However, the Whites could only produce four shots on target.

On the bright side, Raphinha was lively as ever. The Brazilian had a team-high six shots, including a stunning strike to equalise for the second time.

Raphinha was rested for Leeds’ 3-0 EFL Cup triumph over Crewe in midweek. In his absence, fellow winger Jack Harrison was the star of the show as he set up Kalvin Phillips’ opening goal and scored two late goals himself.

Raphinha and Harrison were two of Leeds’ key players last season, so it bodes well that the two wingers will enter this match against Burnley in good form.

Patrick Bamford, the team’s leading scorer last season with 17 goals, has yet to register his first goal of the campaign. But he has provided an assist in each of his last two games, including one to Harrison after coming on as a substitute.

Burnley off to bad start

Burnley once again avoided relegation last season as they finished just outside the bottom three. But if their early Premier League 2021 results are any indication, they could be stuck in another relegation scrap this year.

The Clarets lost their first two games of the season to Brighton and Liverpool. They had a decent record at Anfield in recent years, but they looked clearly outmatched this time around as Liverpool launched 27 shots at Nick Pope’s goal.

Burnley’s success over the years under Sean Dyche has been built upon a strong defence that does not concede too many chances. But with very little investment in the squad over the last few years, that defensive foundation has finally started to show cracks.

Although, Dyche will be pleased by Burnley’s defensive showing in the EFL Cup against Newcastle in midweek. They kept a clean sheet away from home against the Magpies and eventually went through on penalties.

Aaron Lennon, who made history by becoming the youngest ever player in the Premier League at Leeds, made his return after his transfer from Turkey and could face his former team.

Burnley will look to improve upon a poor home record that has seen them lose their last five Premier League games at Turf Moor.

History

Leeds have a significant edge over Burnley in their historical head-to-heads. The Whites have 33 wins to the Clarets’ 18, with 11 draws.

And on their return to the Premier League last season, Leeds did the double over Burnley. After a narrow 1-0 win at Elland Road, Leeds smashed Burnley 4-0 at Turf Moor. Mateusz Klich, Harrison, and Rodrigo were on the scoresheet as the Whites went on to win their last four games of the season.

Betting Tip

??
Burnley vs Leeds United 1X2 Leeds United @ 2.29
August 29, 21:00 (GMT+8)

SBOTOP odds have Leeds United as slight 2.29 favourites to pick up their first win of the season at Turf Moor. Burnley are priced at 3.00 at home, while a draw is not far behind at 3.30.

Much like last season, Leeds have some defensive issues to iron out. But with Burnley struggling to score, Bielsa will like his side’s chances of keeping the Clarets at bay.

Meanwhile, the pace of wingers Raphinha and Harrison should cause Burnley’s backline problems, and they could very well prove the difference in Leeds going on to get their first win of the campaign.
