Premier League: Helloi Jose!

countdown banner

West Ham United vs Tottenham Hotspur

The Special One is back! And things are about to change big time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.  Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Spurs has set the Premier League alight with excitement, so let’s light the blue touch paper…and stand well back!

Premier League: West Ham vs Spurs has just taken on an entirely different meaning.

It didn’t take Jose long to get back into management after his departure from Manchester United this time last year, but the bigger surprise was the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino which left many Spurs fans distraught.

In his five years as Spurs boss Poch has won many admirers for his style of football and his willingness to trust young players, but he hasn’t won any trophies and that’s where Jose comes in.

Talking Points

Is Jose the right man for Spurs?

The pressure has been building on Pochettino for some time, and the young Argentine coach said yesterday afternoon that relations at the club were becoming strained. Hours later he was gone; and this morning we woke up to the news that Jose was in the Spurs hot seat.

He has a bit to prove after his stint at Manchester United, where he spent plenty of cash but just watched Manchester City and Liverpool disappear into the distance, and that was pretty much unforgivable for Red Devils fans. But he did win silverware at Old Trafford and that’s not something seen at Spurs since 2008, so in that sense he’s an obvious choice.

Mourinho is a winner. Just watch how he approaches the FA Cup when that kicks off in the New Year.

But can he buy into the Spurs philosophy or will Spurs buy into Jose’s? Chairman Daniel Levy is a tough cookie to work with and I can’t imagine him loosening the purse strings immediately. The North London club has produced some of England’s finest talent in it’s academy, with the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Harry Winks all becoming England stars. Since his arrival in 2014, Poch has had a net spend of £99m, not a million miles away from the amount Jose spent on Paul Pogba!

Apparently Levy will give his new manager some money to work with in the hope that he wins trophies, saying: “In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football. He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician.

“He has won honours at every club he has coached.”

Spurs had a difficult game against Sheffield United before the International break, settling for a 1-1 draw with the newly promoted Blades. But two weeks off and a new manager might just be enough to kick-start their season.

Hammers on the slide

West Ham head coach Manuel Pellegrini will try to keep his players away for all the noise surrounding Mourinho, with the West Ham vs Spurs news dominated by the drama at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He has enough problems to contend with at the London Stadium.

Having spent heavily, the West Ham fans thought he had a squad which could challenge for a top seven place and they started well enough, but two points from six games has seen the Hammers drop to 16th in the table, one point and two places behind Spurs.

They took a bit of a hammering at Turf Moor before the break, when VAR kept the score down to 3-0 against Burnley.

Pellegrini needs his record signing Sebastien Haller to recapture his early season form. The big striker has four league goals to his name but hasn’t scored in four, and that drop in form has coincided with West Ham’s slide down the table.

History

These two teams have shared the success in their head to heads. There have been 17 wins for the Hammers with 25 for Spurs and nine draws in the 51 games in the Premier League era.

Spurs won this fixture 0-1 last season and Mourinho would take a repeat of that right now. But his new team hasn’t won away in the Premier League since January.

West Ham haven’t won in their last seven games so this is one Spurs can take hold of.

Betting Tip

??
West Ham United vs Tottenham Hotspur Tottenham Hotpspur 1×2 @ 1.84
November 23, 20:30 (GMT+8)

The West Ham vs Spurs betting odds here at SBOBET are saying that this could be a triumphant return to the Premier League stage for Jose.

The Hammers have plenty of quality, but player for player Spurs is the better team and if Jose can work some immediate magic the long wait for an away win could be over.

West Ham are at 3.80 to win and the draw is at 3.65, but I have a feeling Jose will put his marker down.

For an outside bet a repeat of last season’s 0-1 at odds of 9.75 would be no surprise at all.
