Chelsea vs Newcastle United
Chelsea will try to extend their win streak to four Premier League matches when they host Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge next Monday.
It has been so far so good for Thomas Tuchel as he has guided the Blues to a much better place compared to where Frank Lampard has left them before.
The Blues are sitting at the fifth spot with 39 points and they are well within reach for an European qualification for the next term.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United are trying to hang on for as long as they can in order to stay away from the dreaded relegation zone.
The Magpies are at the 16th spot and are level with Brighton at 25 points, and they are looking to make a late push by grabbing more favourable Premier League 2021 results.
The SBOTOP betting odds point for the home side to emerge victorious on this one, but can the visitors give them a run for their money?
As we wait for Monday night, first let us take a look on how these teams match up here in our latest preview.
Talking Points
Chelsea are trending at the right direction
Despite having growing pains, Chelsea have made big strides since bringing over Thomas Tuchel as their new manager.
They are undefeated in their last four league matches as they’ve rediscovered their successful brand of football.
Compared to the free-flowing style that he was used to in Paris Saint-Germain, Thomas Tuchel is instilling a whole new approach in Stamford Bridge to try and get a tune out of their stars.
With their big guns Timo Werner and Kai Havertz struggling, Tuchel has leaned on to Jorginho, Reece James, Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, and Cezar Azpilicueta to provide physicality and toughness that would stifle opposing attacks.
Add along an astute goalkeeper in Edouard Mendy, and suddenly Chelsea are a nightmare to deal with at the back.
Speaking of Timo Werner, the former RB Leipzig standout should be fit enough on Monday after recovering from a minor leg injury. Kai Havertz, on the other hand, remains questionable to play.
Werner has yet to regain his old dangerous form, but he should remain a potent threat alongside Mason Mount, Olivier Giroud, and Tammy Abraham.
Callum Hudson-Odoi was rested against the Blades last week and he should be given consideration to start since he has been killing it on the wings lately.
Newcastle United are severely undermanned
The Magpies cannot afford going into a shootout against Chelsea since they don’t have enough personnel to offset their firepower.
Top striker Callum Wilson is out for at least two months due to a hamstring tear, while Fabian Schar and Javier Manquillo face a similar spell on the sidelines.
Jeff Hendrick will serve his one-match ban after being sent off in their last tiff against Southampton, which is again another headache for Steve Bruce.
With these men out, Bruce will have to dig deeper into his rotation.
Miguel Almiron, Joelinton, and Allan Saint-Maximin are tasked to carry the load, while newly-acquired midfielder Joe Willock will be relied upon after scoring the opener against the Saints.
History
This will be the 150th league meeting between Chelsea and Newcastle United since 1907.
The Blues have been utterly dominant at Stamford Bridge versus the Magpies as they’ve only lost once in their last 25 home games (W18, D6). Their last home defeat dates back to May 2012.
If Chelsea win again versus Newcastle United at home, it will be their eighth straight against an opponent for the first time since winning nine in a row against West Brom between 1984 to 2013.
Chelsea have won their last three league games, which is as many as they had in their previous 11 (W3, D3, L5). They also have conceded only one goal so far under Thomas Tuchel.
Betting Tip
Chelsea vs Newcastle United | Chelsea Asian Handicap -1.50 @ 1.76 | |
February 16, 04:00 (GMT+8) |
The updated Premier League 2021 odds are backing the home side to win on Monday night.
Chelsea are priced at 1.25 to win, while Newcastle are pegged low at 9.75 and chances for a draw are at 6.00 in the 1X2 market.
Chelsea have been on an upward trajectory since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, and meeting an inconsistent lower-tier side gives them a chance to re-assert themselves as one of the elite clubs in English top-flight football.
Newcastle United can definitely give the hosts headaches. However, their accumulation of injuries might be too much to handle for team manager Steve Bruce.
Thomas Tuchel will surely have memories back when Newcastle decided to reject his job application six years ago, and he will be eager to show the Magpies what they are missing.
