The English Premier League isn’t the only league in Europe’s Big Five whose title race is going right down to the wire. The Bundesliga title race is still wide open as Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund continue to fight it out for the German crown.
Bayern reclaimed command of the title chase after their dominant win over Dortmund in Der Klassiker. But there’s just one point between the two German giants and five matches left, which could provide another twist or two.
And apart from the title, the final Champions League place and the two Europa League spots are also being contested by a host of clubs in a tight race that could have a dramatic finish. There’s also the small matter of the relegation play-off place to sort out.
SBOBET Bundesliga fans still have a lot to look forward to in Germany, and here’s an in-depth analysis predicting how everything will shake out in the end.
Title Race
Bayern Munich have a one-point lead over Borussia Dortmund with both title contenders down to just five matches remaining. And of the two, it’s Bayern who might have the slightly more challenging run-in.
Up next for them is a matchup against in-form Werder Bremen, who have gone undefeated in their last 12 league matches (six wins, six draws). They then face the two bottom clubs in Nurnberg and Hannover. However, they end the season against the bottom half of the top four in RB Leipzig — who have been in sizzling form of late — and Eintracht Frankfurt.
As for Dortmund, they next face Freiburg, who recently held Bayern to a 1-1 draw. And after that, they host Schalke in the Revierderby. While Schalke are struggling and down near the relegation zone, they will certainly be up for that game as they look to derail their fierce rivals’ title hopes.
Like Bayern, Dortmund also have a date with Werder Bremen and will be travelling to the Weser-Stadion. They finish out the season against Fortuna Dusseldorf and away against Borussia Monchengladbach, who are on the cusp of a Champions League place.
Between their matches against Bremen, Leipzig, and Frankfurt, it’s not a stretch to see Bayern drop points before the end of the season. However, there’s an equally good chance Dortmund slip up themselves as the pressure continues to mount.
The Bundesliga 2019 betting odds have Bayern favoured for a reason. As they showed in Der Klassiker, Bayern have the experience and the quality needed to outlast Dortmund and claim their seventh Bundesliga title in a row.
Top 4/Europa League Race
RB Leipzig, who have won eight of their last 11 Bundesliga matches, look secure in third. They’re currently six points clear of fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, who’ve had a brilliant season thanks to a breakout campaign by striker Luka Jovic. However, Frankfurt currently have just a one-point lead over Borussia Monchengladbach in fifth.
Hoffenheim are a further four points back of Gladbach, but Julian Nagelsmann’s side are on a roll. They have won three in a row and four of the last five. Meanwhile, seventh-placed Werder Bremen are a point back of Hoffenheim and, as mentioned earlier, their Bundesliga 2019 results have been outstanding.
Leverkusen and Wolfsburg — who are tied at 45 points — are both still in the Europa League race, but they have suffered losses in recent weeks which have seen them slide in the table.
Bremen have a brutal run-in as they face Bayern, Dortmund, Hoffenheim, and Leipzig in their final five matches. That will likely see their undefeated run come to an end — and knock them out of contention for Europe.
Gladbach have a similarly tough stretch which sees them face Leipzig, Hoffenheim, and Dortmund. While they do also face two of the bottom three in Stuttgart and Nurnberg, it will still be tough for them to maintain their top-four bid with that schedule.
That leaves the door open for Hoffenheim to catch Gladbach for fifth, which they will probably do. Hoffenheim have a relatively easy run-in, which includes Schalke, Wolfsburg, Bremen, and Mainz. They also go to Gladbach in a few weeks’ time, which should be the match that seals the deal.
In the end, Frankfurt should be able to hold on to fourth after all. They face Wolfsburg, Hertha Berlin, Leverkusen, and Mainz, who have all been piling up the losses late in the season.
Relegation Race
Both Nurnberg and Hannover are as good as gone, which leaves just the relegation play-off place up for grabs. Stuttgart currently occupy that play-off spot in 16th and are six points adrift of 17th-placed Schalke.
While Stuttgart’s run-in is relatively manageable — at Augsburg, Gladbach, at Hertha, Wolfsburg, and at Schalke — it should be noted that they’ve won just one of their last 14 Bundesliga matches. It’ll take a remarkable turnaround for them to make up the six-point deficit on Schalke, who have a tough final few games themselves.
