Poland 3-1 Romania
A hat-trick from Robert Lewandowski blew Romania away, and took Europe’s most lethal striker to an amazing eleven goals from Poland’s first six football games in Group E.
Adam Nawalka’s Poles now lead the group by six points and have one foot in Russia. And any sports betting fan in Warsaw knows that if you’re looking for a goal scorer, more often than not Lewandowski is your man.
Poland were at the Romanians from the off and in the third minute Lewandowski headed into the path of Kamil Grosicki who saw his shot blocked as the home side pressed for an early goal.
Grosicki was lively throughout the first half and threatened the Romania defence with his pace and trickery, but it was the top man Lewandowski who broke the deadlock from the penalty spot on 29 minutes. He drew a foul from Cristian Sapunaru and then picked himself up to smash the spot-kick high into the corner.
Romania came into the game late in the first half with Florin Andone and Bogdan Stancu both trying their luck to no avail. But it was game over for Christoph Daum’s team early in the second half when that man Lewandowski was on the spot to head beautifully into the bottom corner from a Piotr Zielenski corner. Then on 62 minutes it was three for Super Rob as he stroked home a penalty after Zielenski was felled.
Stancu scored a beauty from outside the penalty area to give the visitors some cheer late in the game; but Poland are as good as there in 2018 while Romania are looking unlikely.
