Empoli 2-3 Napoli
Napoli won 3-2 at Empoli to stay in the hunt for second place but had a huge scare as the struggling hosts staged a second-half fightback.
3-0 up at half time at the Carlo Castellani, Napoli were coasting with huge betting odds on anything other than a win for Maurizio Sarri’s men. But two second-half goals and a late flurry by Empoli no doubt prompted a flurry of mobile betting moves in the stands and at fans’ homes.
Lorenzo Insigne put Napoli ahead on 19 minutes and when Dries Mertens fired a free-kick into the top corner five minutes later, it seemed the writing was on the wall for Empoli. Jose Callejon was then felled in the box and Insigne made it 3-0 from the penalty spot before half-time.
But whatever Empoli had in their half-time coffee is worth bottling, as the home side came out and tested Napoli’s nerve to the full. The visitors did press for another goal from the off but were pegged back when Omar El Kaddourri fired home a free kick on 70 minutes. Then on 82 minutes, Massimo Maccarone made it 2-3 from the spot after Rade Krunic was fouled, and Napoli’s doubts began to creep in.
Mame Thiam came close to levelling with a header and Maccarone came within a whisker as the clock ran down, but Napoli held on deservedly to take the points.
Elsewhere at the top, Juan Cuadrado scored a seventh-minute goal which was enough to give Juventus a 1-0 win at Sampdoria to stay eight points clear as Roma beat Sassuolo 3-1 with Edin Dzeko scoring his 21st of the season.
