He really is the man who likes to make a big statement on a big occasion, isn’t he?
I mean, a few weeks ago the betting odds all pointed towards Dani Alves being reunited with his old boss, Pep Guardiola, at Man City.
Then he surprised many a sports betting pundit by ending up at PSG.
Even fewer would have expected such an instant impact.
The man who starred in Juventus’ run to the Champions League Final last season – including putting Monaco to the sword in the semi-finals – has hit the ground running at his new employers.
The Brazilian full-back bagged a goal and an assist as the French Cup winners hit back to make the Ligue 1 champions suffer at his feet again.
Despite being stripped of key players during the summer, Monaco have managed to retain some others and two of them, Youri Tielemans and Djibril Sidibe, combined on the half hour to put the principality ahead – the latter producing a lovely lobbed finish.
But Alves wasn’t to be denied.
First he struck a debut goal, rifling in an unstoppable free-kick equaliser early in the second half.
Then he turned provider for Adrien Rabiot to head the Parisians in front.
Not bad for a 34-year-old who shows no sign of declining with age.
That was enough as PSG made it five Super Cup triumphs in a row.
It also suggested they may start the domestic campaign as favourites against a Monaco side who have retained, at least until now, the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Thomas Lemar, but will need Coach Leonardo Jardim to be at his best to overcome the loss of key men and shape another successful title bid.
It should be fascinating to see it unfold.
