Man of the Hour: It’s Kagawa to the Rescue for Dortmund!

Augsburg 1-2 Borussia Dortmund

In a night that Dortmund star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed a penalty, his teammate and Japan international Shinji Kagawa took the live betting spotlight in a memorable game that made the 28-year-old the highest-scoring Japanese in Bundesliga history.

Betting websites had the visitors winning the match by a huge margin, but with Augsburg playing brightly to upset the betting odds, BVB had a tough time pulling out a win.

Fortunately, two first-half goals — the winner coming from Kagawa — were enough to save Peter Bosz’s unbeaten record through the first seven games of the German top flight.

Augsburg equalised in the 11th minute, with Caiuby cancelling out Andrey Yarmolenko fourth-minute strike – his first in the Bundesliga.

Despite a bright start for the hosts, however, Kagawa stepped up and slotted home a delicate chip to put Dortmund 2-1 by the break.

Manuel Baum’s men looked dangerous and appeared to equalise in the second, though to no avail. And BVB held on despite a failed ‘Panenka’ penalty from Aubameyang, thanks to some excellent saves from Roman Burki.

With his goal, Kagawa now has 38 league goals in 132 appearances, putting him one up of recent record-holder Shinji Okazaki, who previously played for Mainz and Stuttgart.

The win keeps Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga table with six wins and a draw for 19 points.

On the other games, Hannover 96 suffered their first defeat at the hands of Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1, courtesy of a late penalty from Thorgan Hazard. Eintracht Frankfurt, led by Ante Rebic and Sebastien Haller,  also won by the same scoreline against the other new boys Stuttgart.

Meanwhile, Schalke 04 and Bayer Leverkusen, as well as Wolfsburg and Mainz 05 all played a 1-1 draw and shared the spoils. The same goes for bottom feeders Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen, as they finished their Matchday 7 fixture with a goalless stalemate.
