La Liga: Villarreal and Valencia Jostle For Table Position

countdown banner

Villarreal vs Valencia

Villarreal will look to sustain their form as they host Valencia in their next La Liga match at the Estadio de la Ceramica this upcoming Sunday.

The Yellow Submarine are coming off of a draw against Sevilla three days ago. It was a match to where they would’ve got the job done, but Sergio Escudero and Munir El Haddadi led the charge for Sevilla.

Nonetheless, Javier Calleja’s men are more than happy to grab one point and getting more from their next matches will be their main objective in order for them to have a puncher’s chance of maybe grabbing an Europa League spot.

Villarreal are currently placed sixth at the table with 48 points – trailing only by one point against the fifth-seeded Getafe squad. Below them are Real Sociedad and Valencia who have 47 and 46 points respectively.

As for Valencia, they are coming off of a tough loss against Eibar last night which put a dent to their Europa League hopes.

Ever since La Liga’s restart, Albert Celades’ side have had a mixed bag of La Liga 2020 results with one win, two losses, and a draw in their first four matches and they would be keen on improving their form.

With Europa League spots up for grabs as the season winds down here in La Liga, who will make it there in the end?

For now, allow SBOBET to preview this anticipated match between Villarreal and Valencia.

Talking Points

Can Villarreal maintain their pristine record?

Javier Calleja’s men have been on a roll after a miserable stretch prior to the coronavirus-enforced break – winning three straight before being held to a draw against Sevilla at home last Tuesday.

While they won against the likes of Celta Vigo, RCD Mallorca, and Granada, those results are already expected given their lead at the table compared to the said teams.

They were tested at home last Tuesday versus Sevilla, but their overall performance against a top-tier team was quite encouraging.

Villarreal’s retooled roster benefited a lot from Paco Alcacer’s performance, who had a hand in two of their goals that evening. The former Borussia Dortmund striker has shown that he can do other things rather than just score.

His addition is considered a boon for Javier Calleja, who has been searching for additional firepower since the transfer window. Alcacer’s arrival will surely ease the load off the shoulders of their leading scorers in Gerard Moreno and Santi Cazorla – who have accounted for 20 goals and 10 assists so far this term.

Bruno Soriano’s appearance last Tuesday also provided Villarreal fans some good vibes given that it was his first game back for the club in over three seasons.

But now that their attack is in good shape, the Yellow Submarine would have to address their backline as they’ve given up 40 goals already from their opponents.

They have an interesting mix at the back that could make a difference for Villarreal. They have the young and lanky Pau Torres at centre-back along with former Napoli defender Raul Albiol and they have Mario and Alberto Romero on opposite flanks too.

For them to continue their unbeaten run, their defence would need to click at the right time. And it is likely that they will do so against Valencia this weekend.

Valencia need to keep their defence in check

Prior to the mandated break, Valencia were eliminated in the Champions League after being crushed by Atalanta in two separate occasions – giving up four goals each in those matches.

And fast forward to today, Albert Celades’ men have given up seven goals already in their first four matches in the league.

Two of those La Liga games were an embarrassment to say the least. Against Real Madrid and Eibar, their lineup was reduced to 10 men because they were given a couple of red cards.

Like Villarreal, Valencia would need to work on their defence since they are the third worst in La Liga – conceding 44 goals so far.

Their attack has been underwhelming as well as none from their team has yet to reach double digits in goals this season.

Maxi Gomez and Daniel Parejo lead the way in that regard with nine each along with eight assists. However, they will be needing help from others in order to give themselves a chance in the intensifying Europa League race.

History

Villarreal and Valencia have faced off in 45 matches already, with Villarreal winning in 16 while Valencia won in 19 along with 10 draws.

Prior to this match, Valencia have won four straight fixtures versus Villarreal.

Betting Tip

??
Villarreal vs Valencia Villarreal Asian Handicap +0.00 @ 1.69
June 28, 23:00 (GMT+8)

A quick look at the La Liga 2020 odds point to a win in favour of the home team. Villarreal are priced at 2.29 while Valencia are priced at 3.15 in the 1×2 market.

Despite history favouring the side of Albert Celades’ men, their overall form has been lacklustre in these past few games.

And with Villarreal having a more potent attack, I would have to give them the advantage for this one.
