La Liga: Things are About to Get Real When Sociedad and Sevilla Clash

countdown banner

Real Sociedad vs Sevilla FC

Two La Liga clubs seeking for points are set to lock horns at the Reale Arena as Real Sociedad host Sevilla this weekend.

Real Sociedad are in a similar place to where they were at this point last season while Sevilla are trailing behind them by just a few notches.

La Real are in the top four with nine points which is one behind leaders Real Madrid, Valencia, and Atletico Madrid. Sevilla, meanwhile, are at sixth with seven points.

Imanol Alguacil’s side aim to give their fans something to cheer for again on their first home game since late August. Prior to Sunday, La Real are paying a visit to PSV over at Eindhoven tomorrow, looking for their first three points in Europa League Group B.

Julen Lopetegui’s men, meanwhile, are fresh from a draw against RB Salzburg in their first group stage fixture in the Champions League and a victory here would give them a shot in the arm.

With more La Liga games coming your way, today at SBOTOP, we examine La Real and Los Sevillanos in this match preview.

Talking Points

Real Sociedad out to prove themselves again

La Real are keen to avoid their late collapse last season as they’re aiming for a comeback in the Champions League.

Imanol Alguacil’s squad appeared to be on their way to achieving such when they came hot out of the gates last term, but injuries and attrition eventually got the better of them and they ended up in the Europa League once more.

David Silva, who was their newest addition and their most indispensable at the time, churned out La Liga 2021 highlights for La Real while providing mentorship for their younger players in Mikel Oyarzabal, Mikel Merino, Portu, and Alexander Isak.

Fast forward to today, his guidance has certainly paid dividends for Mikel Oyarzabal, who currently leads the team in scoring with four goals.

The Spanish winger torched 10-man Cadiz in the last time out when Real Sociedad were in danger of being held to only one point.

He is expected to continue to carry the offencive load for Real Sociedad this season as they’ll balance their domestic and European commitments.

But other than Oyarzabal, Real Sociedad’s other attackers have yet to open their account this term. So we expect them to be aggressive for goals especially in this upcoming fixture.

Sevilla can’t afford to waste chances

Despite reinforcing their squad during the summer transfer window, Sevilla have yet to realise their attacking potential as shown during their Champions League group stage match against RB Salzburg yesterday.

It was a chaotic evening at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan as four penalties were awarded for the two clubs in the opening 40 minutes – which is a record in the Champions League.

RB Salzburg striker Karim Adeyemi won three of those for the visitors and they’ve only converted one through Luka Sucic in the 21st minute.

La Liga: Ivan Rakitic scored in Sevilla's recent match
Ivan Rakitic in action during Sevilla’s match against Salzburg

Right before the break, Ivan Rakitic equalised with a penalty of his own when Maximilian Woeber charged into Youssef En-Nesyri – who was eventually sent off via two yellow cards for flopping.

Los Sevillanos had a similar outcome in their last La Liga game versus Elche as Enzo Roco put the hosts ahead inside the first 11 minutes, but Youssef En-Nesyri bailed them out with a goal 29 minutes later.

Overall, Lopetegui’s men need to be more efficient in handling their business if they are going to be taken seriously for the championship this term.

History

Sevilla have had the upper hand in the recent head-to-heads against Real Sociedad.

In their last seven encounters, Los Sevillanos have won five and drawn two and they’ve only lost in one of their last five visits at the Reale Arena in La Liga (W2, D2).

But La Real have been on a tear at home since they’ve won five straight in the league and they are keen on extending it to six for the first time since 2014.

Los Sevillanos won 2-1 in their previous meeting last April as Fernando and Youssef En-Nesyri recorded two quickfire goals to cancel out Carlos Fernandez’s score inside the first five minutes.

Betting Tip

??
Real Sociedad vs Sevilla 1X2 Draw @ 3.20
September 19, 22:15 (GMT+8)

The La Liga 2021 odds point to another close affair between these two sides on Sunday.

Real Sociedad have the slight advantage at 2.48 while Sevilla are installed at 2.81 to win on the road, as per the 1×2 market.

But since they look evenly matched on paper and they’re both coming off of grueling schedules, fatigue will play a factor and it’s likely going to be a stalemate for Real Sociedad and Sevilla.
