La Liga: Barcelona to Bring High-Flying Getafe Down to Earth

Barcelona vs Getafe

Barcelona are still playing catch-up to leaders Real Madrid atop the La Liga table. The defending champions remain three points behind their fierce rivals heading into this weekend’s round of matches.

Of the two front-runners, Barca will have the more difficult assignment this weekend as they welcome third-placed Getafe to the Camp Nou.

After a brilliant fifth-place finish last season, Jose Bordalas has continued to work miracles on the small club from Madrid this term. Moreover, they come into this match full of confidence having won four matches on the bounce.

Nevertheless, the La Liga 2020 betting odds still have Barca as massive favourites since they will be at the fortress that is the Camp Nou.

Talking Points

Despite issues, Barca remain dominant at home

It’s been quite a chaotic season thus far at Barcelona. From the side’s unconvincing performances to the pitch, to Ernesto Valverde getting sacked, to Lionel Messi and sporting director Eric Abidal engaging in a public spat, there have been a number of issues surrounding the side.

There was even more unrest recently when Barca crashed out of the Copa del Rey to Athletic Bilbao. It was new manager Quique Setien’s second defeat in seven games in charge, the first coming at the Mestalla against Valencia.

Although, Barca just about bounced back as they came from behind twice to claim a 3-2 win at Real Betis. And after back-to-back away games, Barca are set to go back home to the Camp Nou, where it’s been business as usual for the most part.

The Catalans have won 10 of their 11 home league matches this season, with 37 goals scored — 14 more than the next-best clubs — and just 11 conceded. In a word, they’ve been dominant.

Lionel Messi has surprisingly not been among the goals of late; he has scored just two in his last five matches. But he’s still been orchestrating the attack like a maestro and producing La Liga 2020 highlights with five assists in his last three games. He helped set up all three of their goals against Betis.

Getafe defence looking impressive

Getafe surprised many Spanish fans with their remarkable fifth-place finish last season. Many thought that was just about as good as it was going to get for them, but they have proved those people wrong.

Jose Bordalas’ men are now up to third in the league, above much bigger and more established clubs like Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, and Valencia.

They will come into this match against Barcelona as one of the most in-form teams in the league after recording four wins in a row.

Without a doubt, a major factor in Getafe’s success this season has been their defensive solidity. They have the fourth-best defensive record in the league, conceding just 20 goals thus far. They haven’t allowed a single goal in their four straight wins and have seven clean sheets in their last nine league matches overall.

And on the other end, the attacking trio of Angel Rodriguez, Jaime Mata, and Jorge Molina is providing enough firepower. The three have combined for 22 of the team’s 35 goals thus far in the league.

However, they have not nearly been as effective against the top sides in the league. They failed to score in away matches against Atletico Madrid and Sevilla and were thumped 3-0 at home by Real Madrid last month.

History

Barcelona’s recent history against Getafe has been pretty one-sided. They have won seven of their last eight meetings. That includes two 6-0 thrashings at the Camp Nou back in 2015 and 2016. Getafe have only scored two goals in their last nine meetings against Barca and none in their last four visits to the Camp Nou.

Barca handled Getafe quite comfortably in their first meeting this season back in September. Goals from Luis Suarez and Junior Firpo secured a 2-0 win. Clement Lenglet was sent off in that match, and he’ll be suspended for this one after he was also sent off after scoring the winner against Betis.

You’d have to go all the way back to 2011 for Getafe’s last win over Barca in La Liga. In the 16 matches since Barcelona have won 13 with three draws. That is quite impressive.

Betting Tip

??
Barcelona vs Getafe Barcelona Asian Handicap -1.00 @ 1.73
February 15, 23:00 (GMT+8)

Unsurprisingly, the SBOBET odds have Barca installed as significant 1.43 favourites to win on the 1X2 market. And despite being third, Getafe are only 7.20 to score a massive upset, while a draw is 4.30.

As impressive as Getafe have been, it seems unwise to bet against Barcelona at home, where they have been consistently strong this season amid all the internal turmoil within the club.

The most likely outcome in this match is that Barca once again run out comfortable winners by two or more goals. However, Getafe are fully capable of keeping it close.

That’s why I’m playing it safe by going -1.00 on the Asian Handicap, where a one-goal Barca win would still result in a return of your stake.
