Ulsan Hyundai vs Suwon Bluewings
Ulsan Hyundai continue to march along atop the K-League table. The Tigers have on a terrific run of late which has kept defending champions Jeonbuk at bay.
Ulsan will now have a great opportunity to record their sixth straight win when they host Suwon Bluewings at Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium.
The Bluewings remain stuck near the relegation zone and K-League 2020 odds don’t like their chances to beat the leaders. But they gave Ulsan a scare in their first meeting of the season and will look to get a better result this time around.
Talking Points
Ulsan looking unstoppable
Ulsan extended their season-best win streak to five games with a 2-1 win over Busan I’Park. The Tigers, who were coming off an impressive 5-1 demolition of Sangju Sangmu, weren’t quite at Busan, though.
With top scorer Junior Negrao starting on the bench, they had just 45 per cent of possession and were outshot, 11-7. Although, they still went ahead in first-half stoppage time.
Busan equalised shortly after Negrao came on as a substitute. The Brazilian then scored his league-leading 18th goal of the season minutes later to seal the win.
Negrao has been in unbelievable form this season, but especially in his last handful of games. He’s now scored nine goals in his five and has contributed over half of Ulsan’s 34 goals this season.
Of course, it also can’t be overlooked what a great job the Ulsan defence has done. They have conceded just 10 goals in 14 games, the second-best defensive record behind only Jeonbuk.
Ulsan’s defence has admittedly slipped of late; they’ve kept a clean sheet just once during their recent five-game winning run.
But they’ve more than made up for the uptick in goals conceded with big scoring outbursts against bottom-club Incheon and even high-flying Sangju Sangmu, who had been one of the best defences in the league before getting smashed 5-1.
Suwon continue to struggle to score
Suwon Bluewings finally snapped their five-match winless run when they beat Gwangju FC 1-0. And they were handed a great opportunity to make it two wins in a row last time out when Daegu went down to 10 men after just 35 minutes.
But despite having a man advantage for most of the match, as well as having 16 shots (eight on target), Suwon couldn’t score. To make matters worse, they conceded in the 88th minute to suffer a heart-breaking loss.
That has been the story of Suwon’s season: they have struggled to put the ball in the back of the net. They’ve scored 13 goals in total, the fourth-fewest in the league.
Star striker Adam Taggart just hasn’t been able to rediscover the form that saw him become the league’s leading scorer last season. He’s scored just four goals on the season.
To Suwon’s credit, they have at least made things tough on opponents defensively. After giving up three goals in a 3-3 draw with FC Seoul, they’ve conceded just three goals in their last four games.
Since taking over from the departed Lee Lim-saeng a few weeks ago, Suwon interim coach Joo Seung-jin has changed up the team’s formation from a back three to a back four.
With Ulsan likely to control much of possession, Suwon will have their hands full trying to keep the leaders at bay.
History
Ulsan have completely dominated Suwon in recent years. Ulsan are unbeaten in each of their last 14 league meetings, with nine wins and five draws.
The Tigers have won the last four in a row, including their first matchup of the season at Suwon. The home side went 2-0 ahead, but Ulsan staged a stunning comeback. Junior Negrao scored twice, including the winner in the 90th minute, as Ulsan snatched the dramatic victory.
Betting Tip
Ulsan Hyundai vs Suwon Bluewings | Under 2.50 @ 2.00 | |
August 08, 16:00 (GMT+8) |
SBOBET odds have Ulsan as massive 1.61 favourites to beat Suwon, who are 4.90 underdogs. A draw is 3.90.
While the first match between these two sides was a high-scoring affair, it seems unlikely that will happen again. For one, Ulsan aren’t nearly as prolific at home (11 goals) as they have been away (23).
Meanwhile, for all their struggles, Suwon can still keep it tight at the back. The total has gone under 2.5 goals in four of Suwon’s last five games. Ulsan will need to work hard to break them down.
