K-League: Streaking Gwangju Face a Huge Test

countdown banner

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors vs Gwangju FC

A mouthwatering clash beckons us in the K-League as Gwangju FC take on the defending champions, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, at the Jeonju World Cup Stadium this upcoming Sunday night.

The visitors are currently enjoying a three-game winning streak since the start of June, with quality wins over the Suwon Bluewings, Busan I’Park, and Incheon United. Gwangju FC have improved to the seventh spot of the K-League standings with 10 points.

As for the Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, the reigning titlists are also enjoying a winning streak of their own after grabbing wins against Incheon United, FC Seoul, and Pohang Steelers since losing to Gangwon FC before ending the month of May. With their splendid run, Jeonbuk remain on top of the standings with 18 points.

It’s still early in this season, but the SBOBET odds continue to favour Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors to win the championship once more, with the likes of Ulsan Hyundai and Pohang Steelers trailing behind them.

Gwangju FC, on the other hand, have been earning some praise after bouncing back from a horrendous start. So the defending champions would have to be very wary of this team even if this game is to be held at their home pitch.

Which winning streak will end first? As always, here is the preview for this weekend’s matchup.

Talking Points

Jeonbuk looking unstoppable

Since the calendar has flipped its page to June, the Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors have been nothing short of spectacular with their three-game winning streak.

They kicked off the month by annihilating FC Seoul with a 4-1 tally as Han Kyo-won, Lee Seung-gi, and Lee Dong-gook filled in some goals and K-League 2020 highlights.

However, against Incheon United, the defending champions struggled mightily in imposing their will especially when there was a torrential downpour in the second half and that clearly affected the way both teams played. But they still got the job done with a 1-0 win.

Just last night, they were able to win against the Pohang Steelers as they overcame an early deficit in the first half.

With six wins and only one loss so far this season, team manager Jose Morais’ men have played up to par.

They are being led by their top players in Lee Dong-gook and Han Kyo-won, who have accounted for seven goals already so far.

But other than those two, Jeonbuk have a ton of depth with the likes of Lee Seung-gi, Cho Kyu-sung, and Kim Bo-kyung capable of providing enough support.

Overall, Jeonbuk have a unique mix of talent, depth, veteran leadership, and youth which makes them a formidable force in the K-League.

Gwangju FC showing major improvement

The Yellows will be faced with a daunting test this weekend and they would need all the momentum they can get in order to give themselves a chance.

Like Jeonbuk, Gwangju are in a midst of a three-game winning streak, which is a huge indicator that they have been adjusting well to the life in K-League first division.

The newly-promoted side has been enjoying the contributions from their major players. Willyan and Kim Jeong-han’s returns have been a boon for Park Jin-seop while Felipe is slowly rounding into midseason form.

The said trio were instrumental against Incheon United in the last time out, so they will be the key players to look out for if you are siding with Jeonbuk.

Park Jin-seop has done an admirable job of keeping his squad intact. As a result, Gwangju FC now belong at the upper half of the league standings.

History

Since Gwangju FC are just a newly-promoted side, matches between them and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors are few and far in between.

They’ve only faced each other 13 times total – with Jeonbuk winning eight, Gwangju winning only once along with four draws.

It’s clear that Jeonbuk have gotten the best of Gwangju in their recent encounters, which includes a back-to-back 3-1 victories in 2017 after losing against them, 1-0, earlier that year.

That should serve as a clear indicator on who are you likely to bet on along with our latest K-League 2020 odds.

Betting Tip

??
Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors vs Gwangju FC Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors Asian Handicap -1.25 @ 1.96
June 21, 17:00 (GMT+8)

Placing your wager on a Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors victory appears to be safe bet on this one.

The defending K-League champions are currently priced at 1.40 while Gwangju FC are pegged at 7.00 and a draw is at 4.50 in the 1×2 market.

Jeonbuk should very well remain as the prohibitive favourites in this ongoing tournament. But if Gwangju can somehow make them uncomfortable particularly in the first half, that might change the complexion of this match in their favour.

If the visitors can shave points off Jeonbuk, it would create a huge domino effect in the standings – giving Ulsan Hyundai a rare opportunity to leapfrog their rivals.
