It’s Looking Good for Fearless Young Lions

England 0-0 Germany

Gareth Southgate’s brave young team put on a fine show at Wembley to deny the World Champions an eighth consecutive win.

If you placed your bet on England before the team was announced, the betting odds seemed, with hindsight, tight at around 3.30 for a home win. However, the live betting market shifted rapidly as it became clear how many inexperienced players Gareth Southgate was ready to blood. But good players perform in big football games and the Young Lions let nobody down.

It was almost a disastrous start when Harry Maguire underhit a sloppy backpass which put Timo Werner in, but keeper Jordan Pickford just got there first. And Manchester City’s Leroy Sane looked dangerous for Germany in the early exchanges, crashing the bar with a stunning strike on 20 minutes.

Then on 22 minutes, Germany couldn’t believe they hadn’t scored when Phil Jones got in the way twice to deny Werner and Sane before Julian Draxler fired over. But England gradually grew in confidence, with Kieran Trippier a constant threat down the right wing. Tammy Abraham also came so close to scoring, just before the break, with a deflected shot.

The Three Lions started the second half well; Trippier crossing for Jamie Vardy, the Leicester player’s header bringing a fine save from Ter Stegen. And debutant Ruben Loftus-Cheek showed skill and strength in an increasingly confident display.

Jesse Lingard had a chance to win it at the death but his shot flew over. But Southgate will find much to be pleased with in this performance.

And there’s food for thought for the established names which were missing. As far as I could see, England only really missed Harry Kane!
