Argentina vs Mexico
Argentina and Mexico will conclude their latest round of international friendly matches when they meet at the Alamodome in the United States.
The Albiceleste are coming off a drab 0-0 draw against Chile in their first friendly in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, El Tri had a much better time of it as they crushed the USMNT 3-0 in their most recent matchup in New Jersey.
The Mexicans have had an awful record against Argentines in recent years and will once again be considered underdogs by the international friendly 2019 odds in this match.
But El Tri are in the midst of an impressive unbeaten run and will have a fine opportunity to finally get one over on the South American giants, who will still be without superstar Lionel Messi.
Talking Points
Argentina look set to make changes
On paper, Argentina vs Chile had the makings of an exciting friendly matchup. But the match turned out to be a bit more physical than the usual friendly with 40 fouls and 10 yellow cards between the two sides.
Meanwhile, there were a total of just 18 shots (five on target) as neither side could find a way through on goal in a 0-0 stalemate.
Argentina created 13 of those shots as they looked the more threatening of the two sides. With Messi and Sergio Aguero out of the line-up, Lautaro Martinez and Paulo Dybala were tasked with spearheading the Argentine attack.
The two Italy-based forwards combined well, with Martinez ending up with five out of the team’s 13 shots. Lautaro, who has scored six goals in 12 international caps for his country, looks set to keep his place in the starting line-up against the Mexicans. Paulo Dybala, who isn’t a regular starter for his club Juventus these days, could also keep his place.
However, Giovani Lo Celso looks unlikely to feature in this match. The Tottenham midfielder limped off against Chile after a bad challenge by Charles Aranguiz.
Lo Celso’s absence would be a blow for the Argentines, who were already lacking in experience and quality in their midfield.
Mexico looking unbeatable
Tata Martino’s reign as Mexico manager has gone off to a terrific start. El Tri have gone unbeaten in their first 12 matches under Martino with 11 wins and a draw thanks to some fine international friendly 2019 results coupled with their Gold Cup triumph.
They successfully reclaimed the Gold Cup after their 1-0 win over the United States. And with some key stars returning to the national team, they delivered a much more convincing 3-0 victory over the Americans in their most recent friendly match.
Javier Hernandez opened the scoring for the Mexicans on his return to the side as he added to his record 52 international goals for his country. “Chicharito” is a fan of Martino’s, saying Mexico are in good hands under “Tata.”
After playing for virtually the entire match against the US, Hernandez will likely make way for Raul Jimenez, who was an unused substitute. Goalie Guillermo Ochoa, defender Carlos Salcedo, and midfielder Jonathan dos Santos are also expected to get a runout.
Napoli winger Hirving Lozano could also be in line for a start after he only played 20 minutes against the Americans.
With those experienced players in the line-up, the Mexicans should still have quite a formidable team to face the Argentines, who have been unconvincing of late. If they approach the match with more seriousness, they could finally beat the Albiceleste.
History
Argentina and Mexico have had 34 all-time head-to-head matchups in history. The South American superpowers have the upper hand in terms of wins (15-5), while there have been 14 draws.
The Argentines have been especially dominant of late, winning seven of their last eight meetings and have lost just once in their last 17 matches (12 wins, five draws). Mexico’s last win came all the way back in 2004.
Argentine and Mexico met twice in the space of a week last year; the Albiceleste won both matches, 2-0.

Despite being without the likes of Messi, Aguero, and Di Maria, SBOBET odds still have Argentina favoured at 2.29 to win in the 1X2 market. Meanwhile, Mexico are not far behind at 3.20.
There’s a great value to be had with Mexico on those odds. They clearly have the superior momentum of the two teams, with Martino leading them on an impressive undefeated run. Their convincing win over the US likely raised morale a bit more, as well.
On the other side, this Argentina side just doesn’t look all that impressive at the moment. There are too many question marks on all areas of the pitch to feel confident in their chances.
That’s why despite their poor history against Argentina, I back Mexico to finally end their winless drought against Albiceleste at the Alamodome.
