Late and great goals, brilliant fight backs and changes at the top of the table. It’s been another fantastic weekend in La Liga.

Los Blancos had the last say as a dramatic second-half comeback took Real Madrid back to the top of the league after Barcelona had earlier won against Atletico.

It was a live betting treat, but not for Villarreal fans who watched their team go two up, to then concede three in quick succession when betting odds had swung towards the Yellow Submarine.

Villarreal 2-3 Real Madrid

After a goalless first half, the match exploded into life as Villarreal took a two-goal lead early in the second period through Manu Trigueros and Cedric Bakambu.

Gareth Bale, back from injury, headed home on 64 to halve the deficit and then Cristiano Ronaldo leveled from the spot ten minutes later. The comeback was complete when Alvaro Morata headed a late winner.

Atletico Madrid 1-2 Barcelona

In the game of the weekend, it took a late goal from Lionel Messi to decide matters after Atletico had looked equally capable of grabbing three points throughout the match. Rafinha had put Barca ahead only for Diego Godin to head home an equaliser soon after, but it was Messi’s day when Luis Suarez set him up for the winner.

Real Betis 1-2 Sevilla

Vicente Iborra was the man on the spot to stab home a 76th-minute winner and keep Sevilla in the hunt in third place. Real Betis, now without a win in six, went ahead before the break through Riza Durmisi. Gabriel Mercado brought Sevilla level to tee up Iborra’s happy ending.

Las Palmas 0-1 Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad moved to within a point of fourth place with a single goal win in Gran Canaria on Saturday. But they needed an awful gaffe courtesy of Las Palmas keeper Javi Varas who passed the ball straight to a grateful Xabi Prieto who side-footed home.

Eibar 3-0 Malaga

Four wins in five have seen Eibar rise to seventh, and it was a convincing display at the Ipurua Stadium to see off an out-of-sorts Malaga. Sergi Enrich was on target again and Adrian Gonzalez struck twice to send the fans home very happy.

Athletic Club 3-1 Granada

Granada remain in deep trouble while Athletic Club stay in the hunt for a Europa place after a 3-1 win at the San Mames Stadium. The pick of the goals came just before the break when Markel Susaeta teed up Inigo Lekue to fire low and hard into the bottom corner from distance.

Espanyol 3-0 Osasuna

Espanyol made it twelve points from the last six games and left Osasuna stranded at the bottom and nine points from safety. Felipe Caicedo headed the opener, and Jurado fired home to double the lead before Gerard Moreno’s injury time finish to make it three.

Sporting Gijon 1-1 Celta Vigo

Sporting Gijon thought they’d secured a vital three points after Moi Gomez converted a penalty just after the break. But it all went wrong on 74 minutes when Jorge Mere received his marching orders for a nasty foul, and the lethal Iago Aspas fired home the free kick.

Alaves 2-1 Valencia

Copa del Rey finalists Alaves made it back-to-back wins with a late goal from Aleksandar Katai. In an action packed last 20 minutes, Carlos Soler pounced to put Valencia ahead but Ibai Gomez fired home for the hosts. Then Katai calmly rounded the Valencia keeper to take the points.

Leganes 4-0 Deportivo la Coruna

What a result this was for Leganes after a run of four defeats. Goals from Alexander Szymanowski, Martin Mantovani, Unai Lopez and Alberto Bueno made it a memorable weekend for the minnows as they leapfrogged Deportivo into 16th place
