Netherlands 5-0 Ivory Coast
It’s been a bit grim for the Dutch for a while now but everything’s starting to look better after a spectacular win over the Ivory Coast at the De Kuip Stadium.
Ajax centre-back Joel Veltman scored a brace as Fred Grim’s Netherlands blew the Ivory Coast away in the first half, and while there is still some way to go, the Orange Army is enjoying football games again after back-to-back wins.
Dutch legend Dick Advocaat is ready to take over from caretaker Grim, and while few betting tips point confidently to the Netherlands qualifying for the World Cup in Russia, on this form there is at least some hope.
The Netherlands were simply too good for the Elephants and it took just 13 minutes to get the home fans bouncing when Memphis Depay crossed for Veltman to plant a firm header into the bottom corner. The Ivory Coast played some lively football and Giovanni Sio was far from shot shy but he couldn’t hit the target, and a double strike from the Dutch ended the contest.
First veteran Arjen Robben blasted home a penalty on 32 minutes and then Veltman was on hand again four minutes later to fire home from close range when Robben turned provider.
It was more of the same in the second half when Davy Klaassen scored on 69 minutes, followed by a Vincent Janssen strike on 75 to make it a rout.
This certainly wasn’t a game against whipping boys as Marc Wilmots Ivory Coast tops its own World Cup group, so do we see the early signs of an Ajax inspired Dutch resurgence?
