Denmark 0-0 Republic of Ireland

Ireland battled to a hard fought draw in Copenhagen against Denmark, to tee up a mouth-watering climax in the second leg of this World Cup qualifier in Dublin.

The pre-match betting odds of 1.73 were well in favour of a Denmark win, having won five of their last seven qualifying football games and with home advantage. But football betting fans knew that Denmark has never beaten the Republic, losing two and drawing one of their three meetings.

It was the hosts who started the game on the front foot as Ireland sat deep and compact, forcing Denmark to play long balls. And the first threat came on 12 minutes when Jens Larsen controlled brilliantly before testing Darren Randolph, and the Ireland keeper made a great double save to keep out Andreas Cornelius’ follow up.

Christian Eriksen took his first shot at goal on 24 minutes but Randolph saved well, and then ten minutes later the Danes were so close when an Eriksen attempt was parried into the path of Sisto who blazed wide.

Ireland had their first real chance, a couple of minutes before the break, when full back Cirus Christie went on a fantastic run, his eventual shot being parried to Jeff Hendrick who’s effort was deflected out for a corner. 0-0 at half time.

Ireland looked comfortable as the second half progressed, coping well with Denmark’s attacks, but still rarely venturing forward. And when skipper Ciaran Clark had a tricky opportunity from a Robbie Brady cross he fluffed his chance.

Try as they might the Danes couldn’t break Ireland down, and as the minutes ticked by the visitors began to break out, but Denmark seemed to find another gear and went on the attack in stoppage time, but the Irish held firm.

It’s half time and anybody’s game. Let’s get it on in Ireland!
