Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Manchester United
It was an occasion to savour.
A day for the Spurs faithful, fans and players alike, both past and present, to bid farewell to their cherished home of 118 years.
For smiles, for tears, for memories. Always memories.
To remember football games and characters from yesteryear, all of whom have graced this fine stadium.
The fact Spurs bowed out of White Hart Lane with victory was something priceless to all those who have the golden cockerel ingrained in their blood.
Betting odds and live betting always favoured them to get over the finish line and complete an unbeaten home league season – 17 wins and two draws a fine record.
Certainly, once the unmarked Victor Wanyama headed home the opener inside six minutes, it looked likely.
But this wasn’t really about the result – although the victory secures the runners-up spot for Spurs and their highest league finish since 1963.
This was about the chance to say goodbye to a second home, to reminisce with a tribe, to remember friendships first forged beyond the turnstiles at a place where everyone had a story to tell or a memory to share, whether that be from the era of Jimmy Greaves, Gazza or Bill Nicholson.
A tide of emotion greeted the beginning and the end of this day to remember in N17 – how fitting that United, a club which shares a healthy respect, tradition and heritage with Spurs in the way the game is played, were the final opponents at White Hart Lane before the north Londoners look ahead to what could be a bright new future.
Naturally, it was Harry Kane – their modern day hero – who had the final word, flicking the ball home three minutes after the re-start for what proved to be the winner.
His 28th of the season and first ever goal against United confirmed his status as the current Tottenham king – the sight of joyous fans invading the pitch at full-time and hugging their number 10 was proof of that.
Among those watching on were Pat Jennings, Cliffy Jones, Glenn Hoddle, Chris Waddle (remember Diamond Lights), Clive Allen, Teddy Sheringham, David Ginola, Edgar Davids, Ledley King, yes even Chas n’ Dave were in town as the party went on and on!
The list went on and on.
Farewell old friend.
You will be much missed but never forgotten.
