Denmark vs Switzerland
Both Denmark and Switzerland are looking to gain the upper hand in their upcoming Euro 2020 Qualifiers match which will take place at the Telia Parken.
These two clubs are bunched together with Ireland, Georgia, and Gibraltar in Group D. Ireland leads the group with 12 points while Denmark and Switzerland are separated only by a solitary point with nine and eight respectively. Georgia and Gibraltar, meanwhile, are at the bottom with four and zero.
After back-to-back draws against Ireland and Switzerland, the Danes have posted two straight statement wins against Georgia and Gibraltar by scoring a whopping total of 11 goals. Shockingly, they drew level against Georgia in the sixth match day after a missed opportunity, and they’ll look to regain momentum on Sunday.
As for the Swiss, a David Goldrick header led them to a draw against Ireland while they followed that one up with a beatdown against Gibraltar. They have a chance to overtake the Danes at the table if ever they win this one on the road.
Team bosses Age Hareide and Vladimir Petkovic will figure in a classic chess match and SBOBET football fans like us can’t wait!
Talking Points
Denmark looking uninspired as of late
The Danes have been undefeated five games in, but their journey has been a tale of frustration of sorts given they were unable to close out in some of their winnable matches.
In their previous fixture, Denmark were held to a goalless draw against Georgia which prevented them from zooming to the top spot of Group D. Despite having more possession and shots on target, Age Hareide’s side couldn’t seal the deal.
Forwards Christian Eriksen and Yussuf Poulsen struggled to make significant impact in that game, while Christian Gytkjaer’s late attempt wouldn’t go in for the Danes.
In fact, that was a far cry from their superb effort against the Swiss a few months ago.
All odds were stacked against them when they were down 0-3 with six more minutes to go. However, in just a blink of an eye, the Danes went on a barrage that left Switzerland heartbroken.
Mathias Jorgensen, Christian Gytkjaer, and Henrik Dalsgaard conspired to push Denmark into making a dizzying run to finish the game with multiple Euro 2020 highlights.
It helped when Christian Eriksen and Yussuf Poulsen took turns in leading their teammates to the right spots for great chances. Eriksen managed to kick the ball in the box for Jorgensen while Poulsen raced to the right and squeezed a cross for a Gytkjaer finish.
The final blow came with some luck as well for the Danes. After a brilliant save by Sommer, Henrik Dalsgaard rose high to nod the ball past the outstretched arms of the Swiss goalkeeper the next time around.
Perhaps Age Hareide would love to re-live the film on that one to pump his boys up. They just need to up their efforts by playing with more energy to try and book their ticket for next year.
Switzerland looking for an upset on the road
Like Denmark, Switzerland are still undefeated in their ongoing Euro 2020 qualifiers campaign with two wins and two draws. Save for their draw against Denmark, the Swiss’ defence has been a fortress as opponents like Georgia, Ireland, and Gibraltar have only combined for a single goal in three fixtures.
Vladimir Petkovic’s men will be coming in brimming with confidence as they’ll fly over to Telia Parken. The well-drilled Switzerland outfit has won 10 out of their last 13 international away games and they have the tactical discipline and personnel to keep the Danes in check.
Much of their success on defence can be attributed to their collective experience. Petkovic has the luxury of bringing in the likes of the veteran trio of Ricardo Rodriguez, Fabian Schar, and Loris Benito or he can opt to bring in Nico Elvedi and Manuel Akanji for added youth and energy.
The combination of Breel Embolo and Xherdan Shaqiri will present a fearsome attack for Switzerland, while Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka is set to lead in the midfield. Their combined quality and offencive chops will definitely provide fits for Denmark on Saturday.
Switzerland’s ability to keep things tight on the road should give themselves a good chance for this fixture.
History
Matches between these two teams are hard to find, which is why fans are normally gifted with highlights when they do face each other.
They’ve only met twice prior to this match with Denmark winning the first one back in 1999 with a 2-1 score before last March.
Betting Tip
Denmark vs Switzerland | Draw 1×2 @3.20 | |
October 13, 00:00 (GMT+8) |
The Euro 2020 odds for this match indicate that this will be a tight contest as Denmark are at 2.28, while Switzerland are placed at 3.05. However, I feel that this will end up with a draw since both of these teams are evenly matched on paper.
Drama and action are to be expected in this match especially since this will pose huge ramifications in the group stage. With a win, either one of these teams can seal their place for next summer’s UEFA Euro tournament.
