Euro 2020: Switzerland and Turkey are Left Battling for Pride

countdown banner

Switzerland vs Turkey

Switzerland and Turkey have had a rough start here in Euro 2020 and both are keen to get back on the winning track when they meet anew this weekend in Baku.

Group A has been dominated by Italy with back-to-back 3-0 victories while placing second are Wales who are also unblemished in this tournament.

And that leaves us with Switzerland and Turkey, who are at the bottom two at third and fourth place respectively.

Matches between Switzerland and Turkey have produced some memorable classics whenever they meet up, so football fans won’t expect anything less from these two proud nations.

As the group stage fixtures come in thick and fast, the Red Crosses and the Crescent Stars should get their act together before it’s too late.

Although their chances at advancing to the knockout stages look bleak as of the moment, we expect Switzerland and Turkey to go all-out in this must-win affair.

Read on below as SBOTOP takes a look at these two squads here in this much-awaited matchup.

Talking Points

Gladbach duo needs to take charge for Switzerland

Switzerland need to go back to the basics if they plan on grabbing the three points against Turkey this weekend.

The Swiss are coming off of a humiliating 3-0 defeat against the Azzurri because the latter simply had their way in all areas on the pitch.

Manuel Locatelli and Domenico Berardi dominated the midfield for much of the game and that created even more highlights for the hottest team in the competition.

Now as they go back to the drawing board, Vladimir Petkovic should to take a closer look on their first game against Wales.

Switzerland had Wales on the ropes when Breel Embolo scored during the 49th minute, but Kieffer Moore punched in the equaliser to share the spoils.

Switzerland's Breel Embolo and Denis Zakaria to thrive in overwhelming moments against Turkey in Euro 2020

Moreover, in the said game, Breel Embolo was causing havoc and he kept running circles around Wales’ shaky defence while Xherdan Shaqiri, Granit Xhaka, and Remo Freuler provided stability in the midfield.

For some reason, Vladimir Petkovic has yet to start Denis Zakaria and perhaps he may consider bringing him on to rekindle his partnership with Gladbach teammate Breel Embolo.

The two have already formed chemistry and their physicality and pace should overwhelm Turkey’s porous backline.

Time is running out for Turkey

Turkey came into the competition filled with potential and hope, but now they find themselves in a deep hole after a couple of horrible Euro 2020 results.

They were crushed 3-0 by Italy in the opener and it was followed up with a brutal 2-0 loss against Wales.

Being unable to score goals is one thing, but giving up a ton on the other end is quite an alarming trend for a defencive team like Turkey.

Prior to this tournament, Senol Gunes’ side conceded only three goals in the World Cup qualifiers, which is the joint best defencive record alongside Belgium.

Unless there will be a reverse of fortunes overnight, it looks like Turkey’s run in the Euro 2020 is over.

History

Turkey have been the better team against Switzerland in the overall head-to-heads. Both of them are playing in their fifth-ever Euros.

In their 15 games together, Turkey have won eight times while Switzerland won in four along with three draws.

Sunday marks their first Euro fixture since Turkey produced a comeback win over Switzerland on the second matchday of Euro 2008.

In the said game, the Red Crosses led at halftime with Hakan Yakin scoring first but Semih Senturk and Arda Turan sparked the late rally en route to their second ever Euro finals win.

That victory proved to be big for the Crescent Stars since they went on to progress to the knockout stages and got to as far as the semifinals.

Betting Tip

??
Switzerland vs Turkey Switzerland Asian Handicap -0.75 @ 1.88
June 21, 00:00 (GMT+8)

The Euro 2020 odds are backing the Swiss to come out victorious since they’ve looked slightly better than the Crescent Stars.

Switzerland are the favourites to win at 1.69, while Turkey are the underdogs at 4.30 and a draw is at 3.60 in the 1X2 market.

Turkey looked like the group’s dark horses since they have a promising lineup that can give anyone problems like Switzerland. But so far, their Euro 2020 campaign has been nothing but a humbling and learning experience.

Recent form favours the Swiss that’s why we’re picking them to win this game. Their extra quality in the final third should be enough to see them through to a narrow victory.
