Spain 5-0 Romania
The mighty Spaniards have closed out their Euro 2020 group stages journey with a bang as they’ve annihilated the slumping Romania team, 5-0, in their match last Tuesday night.
The game was a formality of sorts of La Furia Roja, as they’ve already booked a spot for next year’s competition. They ended the qualifying tournament as one of the best teams by gathering 26 points across 10 match days in Group F.
Multiple players have scored goals for Spain as Fabian Ruiz, Gerard Moreno, and Mikel Oyarzabal chipped in, and that just goes to show the immense depth of their lineup. They are marching on to next year’s competition as one of the hot favourites, per the Euro 2020 odds.
Team boss Robert Moreno’s brilliance on the sidelines shouldn’t be overlooked especially since Luis Enrique is set to return for the national team soon. Enrique gave up his post five months ago when he took a personal leave following her daughter’s death.
Romania, meanwhile, failed to keep their Euro 2020 hopes alive as they sank to the fourth spot with 14 points, putting team manager Cosmin Contra back to the drawing board as they’ll take a break for the mean time.
As always, SBOBET is here to help you re-live some of the best Euro 2020 highlights of this match.
Highlights of the game
Spain started aggressive right as the whistle started when they had multiple chances already for a goal. They made sure to press the Romanians in order to get more possessions.
Alvaro Morata created a great chance for La Furia Roja in the fifth minute when he flicked the ball up in the air for Jose Luis Gaya to head the ball to the back of the net. However, the referees deemed it as an offside.
Morata once again almost scored the first goal of the night in the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium when Cazorla’s left cross found him inside the penalty area, but his sliding kick was blocked away by Ciprian Tatarusanu.
Tatarusanu made another great save against Dani Carvajal’s attempt in the eighth minute. However, Fabian Ruiz was at the right place and at the right time to strike the ball in for La Furia Roja’s first goal of the evening.
Right after Spain scored their first goal, Romania tried to draw level after a great chance on their end. George Puscas found himself open inside the box, but his right foot strike was deflected away by Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Chelsea goal keeper was there once again when Romania had one more great chance after a corner kick.
The away team stepped up their defence a bit when they prevented La Roja from creating viable attacking opportunities. However, that all changed within the last 15 minutes to end the first half.
Gerard Moreno tipped the ball for Spain’s second goal after a lovely cross by Santi Cazorla in the 33rd minute. He scored yet again after 10 minutes via a clinical finish when he controlled the ball wonderfully after a pass by Jose Luis Gaya that went through multiple Romanian defenders.
Riding with his hot streak, Gerard Moreno capped off the first half by pushing the ball at the right flank and his strike bounced off Adrian Rus’ foot to give La Roja’s fourth goal of the evening.
Sergio Ramos almost got into the scoring party when he received a great cross right at front of Tatarusanu. However, he lost control of the ball and overcooked his right foot kick in the 51st minute.
The match became somewhat of a slugfest for the majority of the second half when both teams were unable to create great attacking chances.
After a splendid performance by Moreno, he was replaced by Mikel Oyarzabal, who made quite an impact in this fixture. He would come in and score the game’s last goal when he fired a long range strike after receiving the ball just outside the box in the 90th minute.
Key statistics
La Roja were simply too hot to handle if you’re the Romanian defence as they’ve manufactured 21 shots and controlled 74-per cent of the possession.
Gerard Moreno has had a direct hand in six goals in his three appearances for the Spanish national team.
Spain are undefeated in their last 28 Euro and World Cup qualifiers matches (W25, D3), and they’ve dealt Romania their worst defeat since their 5-0 loss in the World Cup qualifiers against Serbia back in October 2009.
What’s next?
Now that the Euro 2020 qualifiers group stage matches are about to be finished, all players are going back to their respective professional clubs to continue playing in leagues such as the Premier League, Bundesliga, and Serie A.
