It’s a Spectacular Double for Brilliant Barcelona

countdown banner

It’s been coming for a while, and tonight Barcelona lifted the La Liga title with a thrilling 2-4 win over Deportivo La Coruna, courtesy of a Lionel Messi hat-trick…of course!

Football betting pundits have agreed it’s Barca’s title since Christmas, and Ernesto Valverde’s stars have won it with four league football games to go.  And after hammering Sevilla 5-0 to win the Copa del Rey, it’s a superb double for the Catalans.

Deportivo La Coruna 2-4 Barcelona

Defeat consigned Depor to relegation, but they will be favourites on betting websites to bounce straight back.

It took just six minutes for Barca to go ahead when Philippe Coutinho brilliantly chipped into the top corner. Then on 37 minutes, Messi volleyed home his 30th goal of the season. Lucas Perez halved the lead for Depor before half-time and Emre Colak levelled on 64, but it was the genius Messi who won the game—and the title— with yet another fantastic hat-trick.

Alaves 0-1 Atletico Madrid

Kevin Gameiro’s 78th-minute penalty settled this tetchy affair which featured nine yellows and a late red card for Atleti’s Angel Correa. Alaves had won three in four and frustrated Atletico for much of the game; however, the visitors got the opening they needed when Mubarak Wakaso handled in the box.

Real Madrid 2-1 Leganes

Zinedine Zidane made ten changes to the side which beat Bayern in midweek and the second string had to work hard to beat Leganes in this Madrid derby. Gareth Bale and Borja Mayoral scored for Los Blancos, while Darko Brasanac pulled one back for the who can look forward to a third season at the top flight.

Valencia 0-0 Eibar

Valencia lost ground on the top three and failed to confirm a Champions League place after playing out a goalless draw at the Mestalla. In a game dominated throughout by the hosts, Simone Zaza came close to winning it with a late header. But Eibar escaped with a second point in five games.

Villarreal 4-1 Celta Vigo

The Yellow Submarine stay in sixth place after a resounding win over Celta Vigo to end the visitors’ hopes of European football. A first-half hat-trick from Carlos Bacca blew Celta away. Pione Sisto scored for the visitors, but Samu Castillejo made it four in injury time.

Getafe 1-1 Girona

Neither of these two has given up on Europa League football just yet after sharing the spoils in a tough battle. Amath Ndiaye had put Getafe ahead, but Cristhian Stuani levelled from the penalty spot after Damian Suarez saw red for Getafe.

Levante 2-1 Sevilla

Levante can look forward to another year in the Primera Division after goals from Roger Marti and Jose Luis Morales gave them a fourth win in five matches. Carlos Fernandez had equalised for Sevilla but defeat meant the end for coach Vincenzo Montella.

Real Sociedad 3-1 Athletic Bilbao

Bilbao’s Mikel San Jose had a nightmare as Real Sociedad got back to winning ways. The defender put through his own net twice to hand victory to Sociedad. Meanwhile, the host’s sub Ruben Pardo had a bad game as well after he was sent off minutes after coming on!

RCD Espanyol 1-1 Las Palmas

Espanyol are safe, though they secured their top-flight status in an underwhelming draw at home to relegated Las Palmas. Jonathan Calleri put the visitors ahead from the spot, but Gerard Moreno scored on 76 minutes as the Catalans breathed a collective sigh of relief.

Bottom club Malaga visit fifth-placed Real Betis on Monday.
